Holiday Tips For Couple

by asyadiqin

Hi,
My wife and I are going to Sharjah from 29 Dec 2006 to 1 Jan 2007, for oue honeymoon. Apparently, we didn't check that 31 Dec is a big muslim holiday and was wondering if most of the shops will be closed during these periods?

Another thing is that we like to experience any places that we go by ourselves instead of relying on travel agencies as we feel that getting anywhere is the best part. So what is the best place to go in Sharjah and Dubai. We are not really keen on beaches or shopping complexes, but would like to see the real Dubai, not the touristy side.

Lastly, how much is the taxi fare from Dubai Airport to Sharjah? I don't mean those private car services, but metered taxis. We would really like to tour Sharjah and Dubai from a local point of view, like we did in Egypt where we met a local taxi driver who bring us around.

Any help is appreciated.

There are really two parts to Dubai, the original city and 'New Dubai' where the development is happening. That's worth touring around just to see the scale of it all and some of the amazing architecture. You can do that by The Big Bus tour, open-top hop-on hop-off tours. I have a Travelogue on my Dubai pages on what I think is the essential old Dubai tour, based around the Creek which is where the original settlement that became Dubai was built. I also have info on the Big Bus Tour in my Dubai Tips.

The Muslim Holiday ("Eid") is not yet confirmed for the 31st of December.

If it is, most of the expatriate community will be very annoyed as there won't be any New Year's celebrations allowed on that day :-(

Touring Dubai by municipality buses is fun and cheap as well. When in place call them for knowing bus routes and timetable or visit a main station for obtaining a free copy!!

Travel Tips for Sharjah

Al Khan Watchtowers

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Al Khan is an area around the Grand Hotel of Sharjah. I could walk around it and find an old suburb which was almost a town in the beginning of the 20th century. Its residents were mainly members of the Al swdan and Al abu muhair tribes, who form part of the Bany yas tribe. The town was known as a commercial hub for bedouin goods trading and as a summer destination for Dubai residents. Currently, the suburb has been converted into a part of the city and has a lot of commercial and residential waterfront developments.

You can watch my 3 min 46 sec HD Video Sharjah daytime walk part 1 out of my Youtube channel with Andi Susi.

You may watch my high resolution photo of Sharjah on the Google Earth according to the following coordinates 25° 20' 8.06" N 55° 21' 33.38" E or on my Google Earth Panoramio Al Khan Watchtowers .

Sharjah scientific Museum

by Doctor38

This facility is directed to kids. It is a good place to introduce scientific concepts in an enjoyable environment through games and fun. Every thing is explained in Arabic and English. There is a play hall for kids less than 5. There is also a gift shop, computer lab and a canteen. There is plenty of presentation about space and other scientific topics. The exhibits introduce to kids things like human anatomy and Physiology; concepts like visual illusions, sound and light properties, Gravity, Probability, space. It also has a microscope and telescope which the Kids can use. The employees are available to help children and explain things to them.

For this place you have to buy another ticket, Adult 5 Dh , Family 10 Dhs

Charming Sharjah

by ciuchi

We spent a lot of time in Sharjah mostly because we like to go to Coral Beach Hotel to swim and also because we know some nice restaurants and coffe shops there. Sharjah has it's own charm, the Corniche is beautiful and so is the beach. As Dubai, it's developing fast but the atmosphere there has a different scent.Because it's ruler is a poet and a scholar, it's more strict than Dubai. The alcohol is prohibited and while on the street, women should dress modestly.

"Sleeping child"

Most of the time we went to swimm to Coral Beach Hotel in Sharjah (coz we stayed in an apartment downtown Dubai). It was not as expensive as a hotel in Jumeirah and the service was excellent, the staff was very friendly and professional and we were close our friend's restaurant in Sharjah. We came back to this hotel in my last trip to Dubai. In the photo is a cute little boy sleeping in the hotel's lobby :)
