Oil Platforms
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
Since the discovery of oil, Sharjah has developed from small palm-frond ‘arish’ houses hugging the creeks, to a modern city that extends all the way to the UAE’s East Coast. Modern development took off in the early 1970s resulting in the rapid expansion of the town and Emirate as a whole.
You may watch my high resolution photo of Sharjah on the Google Earth according to the following coordinates 25° 22' 13.78" N 55° 23' 27.16" E or on my Google Earth Panoramio Oil Platforms in Sharjah Sea Port.

Arabia's Wildlife Centre is full of live animals from the Arabian Peninsula. See the rodents, reptiles, spiders and birds housed in clean and well looked after enclosures. No photos allowed here but cameras can be left at reception. After the centre, see the Children's Farm next door which houses camels, geese, goats, donkeys and cows. Kids can take donkey rides here and pet some of the animals. Entry for both is included on the park ticket (see Natural History Museum details) and opening hours are the same.

"Al-Shariqah "
Al-Shariqah is the official name but locally it is pronounced as Sharjah. The name comes from Arabic stem Sharq which simply means the east or sun rise. Although Sharjah (and the UAE) are located on Eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula, It is believed that the name Al-Shariqah come from a deity that The Arabs of this region used to worship in Pre-Islamic era more than 1500 years ago. That deity was known as Al-Shareq.
