It is true. Sharja is a dry city.

I don't think I'd agree that Sharjah is a great place to visit. There's much more in Dubai and if you want to see other parts I suggest across to the Indian Ocean side to Fujeirah, or the northern emirates such as Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah.

Alcohol is not served in any outlet in the Emirate of Sharjah. Plus being under the influence would be a big offence, therefore most choose not to drink while living in Sharjah!!

We stayed in Sharjah at one of the 5 star hotels and even though the emirate is dry, if you speak with one of the hotel staff they can point you to a certain warehouse near the docks where alcohol can be bought. This though will be illegal and the penalties are severe if caught.
It's better to buy all alcohol at the airport duty free and go into Dubai if you want to drink more after the duty free's have gone.
I like Sharjah. Not as noisy as Dubai and an easy drive to RAK or to the east coast.

Travel Tips for Sharjah

The Cultural Capital - Sharjah Museums

by JessH

Sharjah has a rich legacy of arts, heritage and culture and promotes itself as "the UAE"s cultural capital". The emirate has preserved its natural and cultural heritage across the Emirate in the form of historic buildings, museums and nature reserves.

The Sharjah Museums Department was established in 2006 as an independent government department affiliated to the Ruler's Office. This department oversees and links the current and future museums of Sharjah. The Sharjah Museums cover the arts, Islamic culture and history, heritage and history of the emirate and the region, archaeology, science, children's learning, natural history and the environment. I find their website very useful, as it links to all the different museums, centres and art galleries in the emirate.

Al Khan Lagoon and Corniche

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The second lagoon – Al Khan is still under construction which comes to its end. I walked along its eastern side twice. The third lagoon – Al Mamzar is bordered with Dubai and is under construction which began not so far.
A walk around lagoons is very exciting because of magnificent views on skylines and waterfronts.

You can watch my 3 min 41 sec HD Video Sharjah daytime walk part 2 out of my Youtube channel with Tata Simonin – Desert Sun,

Sharjah Islamic Museum

by Doctor38

A nice museum contains something of every thing. It had few halls including The Kaaba hall with its Kaaba Covering. The Islamic Mints Hall which has a big collection of coins covering all dates and geographical areas. There is also a manuscripts hall and an Arabesque and Ceramic Hall. All displays in Arabic and English

I Swam to Sharjah!!!

by Marisola

"It was so beautiful!!!"

I went to Mamzar Beach in Dubai, and wanted to swim across the sea to Sharjah. I had heard it was dangerous, but didn't listen... oops! I swam 350 meters across, and when I got to the beach in Sharjah, I saw at least one reason why... Jellyfish, tons of them, on the beach! Now I had to swim back. I was very nervous, but I came back without a scratch, Thank God!
