Hotel suitably close to airport or cruise ship terminal.

by dragonannie

We'll be arriving in Dubai by air late at night - staying a day and a half - then getting on a cruise ship. I'd be grateful for any suggestions for suitably located hotels. We're more interested in seeing old markets rather than new shopping malls. Thanks.

The airport is only about 7 kilometres from the city centre so getting there only takes a few minutes. That's where the historic part of Dubai is, with the Creek, the souks etc. so I suggest you stay there, as near to the Creek as you can. Which hotel depends on your budget.

Dood advise. You may stay either in Deira or BurDubai in hotels near to creek which is also not to far from Hamria Port where the cruise ship is located! I think if you visit your local travel agent and book a hotel you would get a good package!! Just insist on hotels near to the creek either in Deira or Bur Dubai.
Safe trip and good luck.

Thanks - we're thinking of going for the Dream Palace. Will that be within walking distance of the Creek or would we be better at the Residence Meridien?

Dream Palace hotel is in Al-Muraqabat street so there is about one kilometer away from Dubai creek also Residence Meridien is about almost the same distance from creek so I believe you have the choice of the one which offers better facilities/price!!

Travel Tips for Dubai

Turtle on the hotel beach...

by estephan

The Persian Gulf - is just great!!! I haven't ever thought that it might be so beautiful. The water is turquoise-green, clean, the sand is almost white... and i even seen some huge turtle caming out of the water on the shore....have never seen ones before except those living in the zoo...: )
While travelling thru the emirates u might see many wild deserted beautiful beaches alond the highway....They are really great!!! But you will not see any people on them.... Why? - beacause it's not allowed to swim, take sun baths wearing swimming suits on these beaches open to the sight of any stranger passing by... (just think of it - you expose yourself half-naked to the eyes of moslem locals!) It's just sort of immoral and absolutely unexceptable.... So the best scene you can see while driving along these nice beaches -is a company of locals having BBQ on the beach on the Friday afternoon. That's it. If you want to swim or get sun baths - go to the real public beach, and enjoy yourself there....
strange attitude to the simple things, isn't it?
But this is an oriental state of mind, oriental mentality if u will... and you have to respect it while you're in their country...

Golfing in Dubai :-)

by 37SingleMaleInDubai1

The Classic Golf Destination

Dubai is the pioneer of golf in the Middle East with championship standard grass courses to challenge the skills of even the most experienced players.

Nad Al Sheba Club

Dubai’s third grass course, with its links course straddling the Nad Al Shiba horse racing circuit and venue for the annual Dubai World Cup, the richest horse race in the world. The club offers the only fully floodlit 18-hole course along with a floodlit driving range in the Middle East and night-time golf has proved very popular.

The Course

The only fully floodlit 18 hole course in the Middle East.

18 holes, par 71-6428 yard course.
Built around eight lakes, three of which are for irrigation.
The golf course layout has all the characteristics of a Scottish links, with rolling fairways and deep pot bunkers. The course is generally flat with the new front 9 holes featuring elevated tees
Facilities The three-storey blue-tiled clubhouse offers panoramic views across the race track and golf course.

Built in the traditional style found at British golf courses, the interior features panelled walls and leather sofas.

Facilities at the superbly equipped clubhouse include a Pro Shop, bars and a 100-seater Steakhouse restaurant.

Ten first-floor hospitality suites offer corporate entertainment facilities on golf and race days.
Golf instruction available from five qualified members of the PGA.

Rules of Play

Visitors are welcome on a “pay-as-you-play” basis, as well as to use the public driving range.

The dress code requires collared shirts and golfing shorts and proper golfing attire.

All players must have a handicap of 28 or less for men and 45 or less for women.
Profession of a playing certificate from any of the Dubai golf courses also qualifies.
All golf courses in Dubai are apikeless.

6 countries in less than 6 hours

by rachelleiris about Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall

the first time you visit Ibn Battuta, you have to psyche yourself up for a walking expedition. chances are, it would more likely be an interior architectural tour rather than a shopping experience -- as this humongous mall showcases 6 countries which the 14th century explorer Ibn Battuta visited in his 29 years of traveling throughout the Middle East and Asia! (hmmm.. for all you know, Ibn could very well be one of the founders of virtual tourist! wonder what his ranking would be =)).

each of the six zones has a unique architectural representation of the six countries. if you're bent on shopping rather than "exploring", so-to-speak, the zones are generally-grouped into ff:

- China Court is basically for entertainment with UAE's first IMAX screen.
- India Court is basically for fashion shops such as Fitz & Simons, H & M, Top Shop and the like.
- Persia Court is mainly dedicated for lifestyle shops anchored by Debenhams.
- Egypt Court is for sports stuff.
- Tunisia Court is where you'll find Geant for your weekly shopping needs.
- And finally, Andalusia Court which offers basic necessities such as dry cleaning, video rental, etc.

at the end of each zone, you will either be flabbergasted or appalled by the most intricate but equally-humongous-scaled ceiling and wall details.

whichever end of the mall you reach, you deserve a good binge at the foodcourts.

parking is not at all a problem. but if you're carrying loads of shopping bags.. and since this is a huge one-level mall, you always have the option of taking a cab back to your parking slot.

Elegant Lounge

by MM212 about Grosvenor House Lobby

I recommend going to the architecturally stunning lobby of the Grosvenor House Hotel for pre- or post-dinner drinks. While it is not a crowded bar scene by any means, it provides an elegant lounge setting for an aperitif. It is also a great place for people watching.

At the top!

by PrincessMonja about La Parrilla

We decided to go for dinner at the Jumeirah Beach, when we arrived we asked the concierge if he could recommend a restaurant; his reply was "Madam, we have over 20 - What would you like to eat?" We settled on the highest restaurant (for the view!) - and this is the Argentinian Parrilla - and it is excellant. When in rome... Obviously the steak is a good choice. When we visited I didn't eat meat so I had the fish - which was lovely.

The restaurant had a couple dancing the Tango and the most fantasticview of the Burj al Arab.
