by caliyare
Hello Everybody
I am Canadian of Somali origin, I am travelling to Dubai this week & I was wondering are there any cheap Somali owned motels for like 40-50 US Dollars a night?
Thanks in advance
cheers

I don't know about the ownership, but in any case I doubt whether you'll find much for that price in Dubai - especially at the moment when the city is full of tourists and business people for a whole series of major events.
You can check the budget hotels on sites such as www.godubai.com and www.dubaicityguide.com

Hi there,
Probably in Gold Souk area you can find hotels managed by African/Somali staff, you have to look for it.
For contact detail of many hotels check my hotel/Accommodation page on the following URL:

Safe trip and good luck.

Salaam! For around 130 USD (if I remember correctly) you could try staying at Al-Hijaz Heritage Motel. It's run by Somalis and is near Dubai Creek and within easy walking distance of the gold souq and the spice souq. I didn't stay there, but I did stop in and check it out for future reference; it's definitely on my short list for future visits. Be advised, this is not a luxury hotel! They do have an internet "cafe" and a small restaurant, but that's about it. What it is is an historical home (leased out by the government) in an historical neighborhood, with a mosque and a restored school/museum next door. It's clean and the management seemed friendly. No booze allowed, apparantly. If you're looking for something approaching authentic atmosphere in an otherwise ultra-modern city, you might want to check it out.

Yes, that's a more realistic price than the $40 to $50 our friend is looking for!
Travel Tips for Dubai
Travelling in Ramadan.
by euzkadi
Ramadan is a special time for muslims, they can´t eat, drink or smoke during the sunlight. All restaurants are close (except in the big hotels), and there´s virtually no nightlife during this holy month. So check when Ramadan falls. I visit Dubai during this month, and i had a great time, but was quite hard for me, without water or food during the day.
The only place to get a beer in Sharjah
by kuwait_david
Even though Sharjah is a dry Emirate, as soon as you go through passport control at Sharjah Airport you are out of the country and can buy a drink. Take an immediate right after passport control sit at the cafe and order a cold Heineken. If you are flying Air Arabia they are a dry airline so if you want a drink during your journey this is your one and only chance.
Mall with a few large international outlets
by pakistanibrain about Times Square Center
The Times Square Center is the latest addition to the already high number of malls in Dubai, as it was opened in May 2007. The major outlets in the mall are Sharaf DG (this outlet is the largest Electronics store in the Middle East), Intersport (first outlet in Dubai) and Toys'R'Us. Electronics, Sports items and toys The prices at Times Square Center are comparable to the Dubai average.
Dubai Metro
by Doctor38
Not yet. It is still work in progress. When you visit the city you'll run into lots of metro related work. Hopefully it will be ready in september 2009, a second line in 2010. lines 3, 4 and 5 are also in the planing. You can get more info from the web site below.
On July 22 the fares were announced. the ride will cost you any where from 2.5 to 6.5 DH. It cane cheaper if you buy a subscribtion. Things will be more clear once it is up and running
Dine in style
by wacked about Noodle Bar
Excellent location, in one of the most famouse skyscrapers in Dubai. There is nothing Middle Eastern about this restaurant, but it has other bars and clubs very close by, has a great atmosphere, and fab food at a reasonable price.
Ooh by the way, it sounds silly, but you must make sure you ride in the glass elevator of the building during the day and night, it;s amazing and you'll see half of Dubai from up there! Garlic spinich, the duck and dumpliings!! yummmy.
