Hi Mimi, welcome to VT.

We always have difficulty trying to organise Dubai meetings, but it does happen once in a while.

Timing and venue are the most difficult points for all to agree!! :-)

Re: Vt meetings

Welcome to VT,

It helps when you write a bit more about your interests on your hp and post some photos, put your hometown and list the places you've visited on your travel map as people like to know who they are meeting.

If no Dubai meeting is coming up you can also approach another local member by email and ask whether he/she would like to meet for a coffee. There are heaps of mini meets that way that are not necessarily posted in the meetings calendar.

Good luck!

Travel Tips for Dubai

Dubai Creek

by sue_stone

Dubai has been a trading centre for centuries thanks to Dubai Creek, a natural sea-water inlet which meanders through the centre of the city. To me it doesn't look much like a creek, but more like a river.

This picturesque waterway offers you a glimpse of the old Dubai. The Creek is lined with bustling wharves where you can watch the loading and unloading of the dhows (traditional boats), which still travel the ancient trade routes to places like India and Eastern Africa.

The best way to get a feel for the Creek and traditional Dubai life is to get out on the water. Catch one of the public water-taxi type boats called abras, which go from one side to the other, and can be hired for longer trips too. The banks of the Creek are undergoing major redevelopment. On the Deira side you can enjoy a walk on the paved promenade, snooping at the dhows and gaining an insight into the importance of the Creek in the city's history.

At the inland end of the Creek is a wildlife sanctuary where you can see migrating shore birds, including the beautiful Flamingos which have made the Creek their permanent home. We drove past the sanctuary and I was amazed to see the massive flock of these impressive birds.

Restrictions during Ramadan

by Ali&Steve

October 4th is the expected date for the start of the holy month of Ramadan in 2005. If you're staying in a hotel in Dubai during this period, you won't be much affected, as it tends to be business as usual to a great extent. If you're out and about, adults should not eat (not even gum) drink or smoke in public before sunset. Hotels and many restaurants around town will set up Iftar tents where you can enjoy the breaking of the fast.
There will be no live music for the whole month, although there may still be background music in restaurants.
Alcohol is still served in the hotel bars. Emiratis are very tolerant of western culture, other religions and customs, and often turn a blind eye to inappropriate behaviour by visitors. During Ramadan, standards are higher.

LITTLE GEM - XVA GALLERY FILM SCREENINGS

by Siddha3th

When it rains, it pretty much pours, doesn't it? For years a cinematic desert, quite literally, Dubai has suddenly sprung to life with little pockets of underground film movements. The XVA Gallery - owned by a lovely Swiss woman, can lay claim to hosting the most picture-perfect of these, its beautiful mud and brick-lime walls lending themselves perfectly to film being filtered through the projection screen. Without losing any sheen off its art gallery status.

The setting's wonderful - a heritage villa in the old Bastakiya Quarter by the creek. You'll have to lose yourself in the area's small, winding lanes to get there, but a thin curtain of shimmery beads will let you know you've arrived. The Gallery's central courtyard, flanked by lanterns and charming little knick-knacks, is suitably decked with simple couches and chairs for people to enjoy the film comfortably. And you can order some food to go with your film, from the gallery assistants nearby.

The cinema showcased here isn't really indie or alternative, but still pretty left of the middle to keep your interest sustained. A wednesday evening shindig, this is a nice way to spend a couple of hours during Dubai's lovely post-summer weather.

Carrefour

by Rinjani about Carrefour

What a special about Carrefour?? Well, you can find almost every items needed. And that’s why Carrefour known as Hypermarket. Usually they have good price and good stuffs.

In Dubai, you can find Carrefour in City Center and Sindagha. All kind of stuffs. Clothes to home appliance, fish to dates. Credit card and cash

Dubai Transport Buses

by Amisha074

The Dubai Transport Buses are pretty cheap. Most routes are well serviced and the city is well connected. The fare ranges from Dh. 1.5 to 2.5.

When in the city you can dial their toll free number : 8004848 for queries regarding bus routes, fares and schedules.

Taxis are much, much faster than buses and not too expensive. The starting (minimum) fare is Dhs. 3.50. They run by meter.

The best way to get to the city from the airport is by bus. The starting fare for taxis is Dh. 20, whereas an airport bus will get you pretty much anywhere for Dhs. 3. These Buses have most major hotels on their routes. The 402 terminates at Al Ghubaiba bus station covering most of Bur Dubai. The 401 terminates at Al Sabkha covering most of Deira.

All bus drivers speak English and are very helpful.
