Advice on planning a trip to dubai

by jmstapes

Hi, My husband and I would like to go to Dubai for our 10th wedding anniversary in May.

Firstly is this a good time to travel with regard the weather? Also we would like to ideally stay 2 nights at a city hotel and 2 nights at a beach hotel. We are leaving the kids at home so do not really want a family type hotel (more romantic!).

Any advice for hotels - ive looked at the jumeriah beach hotel which we like the look of any advice for nice city hotels? Also is it better to book with a travel agent and try and get a package deal or book flights and hotels separatly? As its our anniversary we don't mind spending a bit of money but couldnt stretch to the Burj!

thanks for any advice you could give.

Hi Justine, welcome to VT.

May is the beginning of the hot weather so the earlier in the month you can come the better.

For a city hotel I'd recommend either Sheraton Dubai Creek or Radisson Blu Dubai Creek. If they're a bit too expensive the Riviera, also on the Creek, would be anther good choice.

My own preference is to book online myself for flights and hotels, but you could check the cost against whatever an agent could come up with.

JBH is a good hotel but there are others along the beach you could look at. In the same complex and also a Jumeirah Group hotel is Al Qasr at Madinat Jumeirah (a stunning hotel) or further along the beach there are Sheraton, Hilton, Ritz Carlton, Le Grand Meridien, Le Meridien Mina Seyahi, Habtoor Grand. They're all good but I'm not sure how the prices compare.

Congratulations :-)

To check out the various hotels, have a look at www.hotels.com. See what aspects appeal to you most - interiors, spas, pool, views, location, etc & then make your selection.

Of course, if an agent can offer the same/similar hotel at a better rate, then snap up the package. But otherwise, do it separately to ensure you get a place you want!!

May, however, will be hot - for that city December is best!!

For some romance, consider a 'desert villa'. Also, experience a traditional dhow trip up the creek.

Hi there,
As per my experience travel agents usually have better deals that anybody can get on own, so consulting one or two travel agent would be wise to ensure availing the best possible deal.
Good luck.

You can get some really good deals with Travel Agents to Dubai which you cannot get on line. Often a newly opened hotel will do good deals. Occupancy is down in Dubai and the UAE. ( My company supplies hotels there) Friends of mine stayed in the Atlantis Palm for peanuts when it first opened. Emirates are doing some good prices at the moment(but its usually for summer time) ....and have a look at Booking.com for hotels. But definitely see what a travel agent has to offer. I prefer to stay on the Sheik Zayeed Road but thats a matter of preference. Some people want to be on the Jumeirah Beach Road. I like the One and Only Royal Mirage, Emirates Towers and a whole lot more! Have a look at TravelbagDubai.co.uk.

May shouldn't be as hot as hot as 45C, more like mid to high thirties.

May temperatures are still ok for lying lazily on a beach, but not for walking around or sitting outside comfortably.

Another romantic and affordable city hotel is the Al Manzil Hotel right next to the Burj Khalifa.

Travel Tips for Dubai

Dubai For........

by Rinjani

As many other places in the world, there is always good and bad about everything. Although Dubai seems so glossy and offers fantasy living, there are also low down about the city. But, let’s see the bright side of what Dubai can offer, check below…

Dubai For…………..

Shoppers
It’s a heaven for shopping. From clothes to electronic gadget. Not always cheaper compare to the other places in the world, but with so many malls, you will have more options. Good bargain? Come when Dubai Summer Festival (starting from June) and Dubai Shopping Festival (starting January)

Water Sports and Beach Lovers
Beach, Beach, Beach! The beaches in UAE generally are clean. Most hotels along Jumeirah Beach have their private beaches and beach clubs. But there are few public beaches that you can enter with small amount of entrance fee. Sun tan lovers, you will love Dubai sunshine. Just never sun bathing without sunscreen.
If you can’t stand lying on the beach whole day, there are some options for water sports lover. Jet skiing, kitesurfing, wakeboarding, parasailing, diving, sailing, kayaking, etc are usually available at Hotel’s beach clubs, such as Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Hilton, Jumeirah Beach Club, etc and some other private clubs. Family Life
Some families I met told me that they love Dubai because of its children friendly environment. Some censors applied here are quite annoying for adults, but at the other side it also helps families to protect their children from ‘unwanted information’
Education is quite expensive and some people I met told me, having children here are quite expensive as well. But as in other places in the world, there is always good and bad about everything.

Clubber and Socialite
Dubai is known as work-hard and play-harder. With so many clubs in town and so many events in Dubai, you will always have something to do in your agenda. Clubbers, you will be spoilt by choices. Socialite, with so many snaps of Who’s Who in local magazines and newspapers, there is always chance to be spotted under flashlight.

Explorer
It depends on what you like to do. But exploring the other side of Dubai such as Deira Karama and Bur Dubai are good experience. Or if you’d like to explore the glossy side of Dubai, luxury seems endless here. From nature side, it is nice to explore outside town. Fujairah, Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah are best options for nature lovers.

Job Seekers
The market is still lucrative. Although it’s not that easy to find a job in Dubai like before and so far I observe there is decrease on package offered. Usually people come to Dubai under visit visa and look for a job. I can say, now it’s not that easy. With high cost of accommodation and sometimes cold shoulder recruitment database, it’s depressing sometimes. The best part, if you plan to do so, just do your homework first. Try to do as much research as possible and try to get in touch with company recruiting in Dubai, get in touch with people for recommendation and learn about visa and regulation.

Light House

by Rinjani

If you happen in Dubai and you see a house covered by the lights in the evening, usually that’s a sign there is wedding ceremony by local Arabic people. The bright shines of the light is beautiful. Unfortunately I never attend any of Arabic wedding ceremony (I wish I can….) But I am happy enough to capture the light house…from outside : )

A kitsch italian imitation

by xaver about Mercato mall

Mercato Mall, Dubai, is a unique themed shopping mall in Dubai .The name has been derived from the Italian word from market . It has a distinct Renaissance architecture and here you will find fusion of Italian, French and Spanish essence .
Mercato is the brainchild of famous Italian architect, Daniele Morelli, who did lot of research to shape out the dream of Mr Abdul Rahim Zarooni, the veteran entrepreneur with an eye for creative brilliance. In the supermarket here we got to find camel milk, the taste is nothing good, to be honest, but it's something I had to try.

Cyclone

by Willettsworld

Cyclone is meant to be a nightclub but is nothing more than a meat market with chinese girls at one end and Russian/east Europeans at the other. Some of the Chinese girls are quite nice ;-) but of course they're only after one thing and that's your money. So if you want to pick up a girl then this is the place for you. If you want to dance, then it isn't.

Leave the shops in style

by kelhan

Dubai shopping centres know how to look after their clients. A concierge service for taxis is at your service when you shop in the larger centres. Red carpet and roped waiting areas, I kid you not.

Taxis are an affordable way to get around Dubai. But some of the drivers are pretty aggressive when on the road. Not the best for whiplash sufferers. We had half and half - some really good drivers and some drivers that made us wonder if I'd we'd ever get in a taxi again!
