Dubai rail

by RodDixon

Is there a rail service from the international airport operating as yet?

Re: Dubai rail

by colin_bramso

No Rod, the Metro first section doesn't open until September.

Re: Dubai rail

by 37SingleMaleInDubai1

Yeah its 09.09.09. :-)

Re: Dubai rail

by colin_bramso

They're working desperately for that Amir, having committed to the date publicly many times, but I think they're a bit behind the deadline! I saw a train test running along SZR elevated section today by Mall of the Emirates, but there's a lot of work still to do on the stations.

Re: Dubai rail

Very true Colin, financial squeeze has affected everything :-)

Re: Dubai rail

by JessH

Not just the financial squeeze... just poor planning as well.
I'd be very impressed if they manage to fully launch the metro in September.

Re: Dubai rail

by cgf

they will manage, too many V.I.P. and things involved. It must start 09/09/09.
Maybe not 100% like many times it happens when a new metro line start, but it will begin that day.

Re: Dubai rail

by bugipogi

The contractors need to start operating on 09.09.09 or else they will be fined. I heard it will be 1,000,000 EAD per day!

But I suggest take a bus just outside the airport. Ask the driver which direction you are going. Most of the bus drivers are tourist friendly! Good luck!

Travel Tips for Dubai

Shopping

by xaver

Shopping, this seems to be the national sport in Dubai, this is also why I had the impression this would be the perfect location for an eventual "Pretty woman" part II.
When I said this to a friend at home, his answer was: strange as the soul of the shopping is female and there they are all covered.
BIG mistake, infact he and many others think that a woman not showing her body has no interest in shopping. Actually malls are full of women shopping here and there and even their abayas that look all the same for our eyes are different, they also have trends and styles that change every year.

Experience a Luxury with A Great Offer

by Rinjani

Some people I know love to buy The Entertainer book. If you love to eating out, indulge your self in best restaurants, so the book is worth to buy.
The book price is around 200 Dirhams, and available throughout the main bookshops in UAE.

The book gives you a great variety offer, discount coupon and also description about the places. Usually the discount is 10 to 30% depend on the restaurant.

What you need is, read the hint carefully. For example, only certain food get the discount. Or you need to spend to certain amount and get the discount, etc. The book is a great offer to experience the nice indulgence without hurting your credit card so much.

Souqs in Dubai

by zuyao

Souqs are Arabian bazaars and are the traditional way of shopping. The souqs in Dubai are a good way to shop for cheap items through bargaining. The souqs are in fact a tourist attraction in itself and I’ve listed them under ‘Things to do’. Check them out there. Some souqs you should not miss are (in order of my preference): Textile Souq, Gold Souq, Perfume Souq and Spice Souq. Go there even if you don’t intend to shop. The atmosphere is nice and amusing. Although I wouldn’t think this is an authentic Arabic experience since most of the traders are Indians. But it still makes an interesting visit. Come at night when the weather is cooler and you can enjoy the bargaining exercise.

A DIFFERENT COLOUR OF NIGHT

by Siddha3th about CHAMELEON

Another fantastic addition to Wafi's restaurant/ bar collection, Chameleon is a swanky affair minus any of the pathetic pretension. The Chameleon staff are mainly to blame for this, a helpful, lively bunch who go about their business with a sense of pride. Watch out for Olga, the tall girl with a lovely smile... she'll point out everything that's a must-have on the menu.

At Chameleon, the ceilings are low, the light is muted and the atmosphere is heavy on that lazy vibe. There's a small stage set aside for the resident jazz band to come shake things up on Saturday & Sunday nights.

Ah, and then there's the cocktails! A pretty crazy selection on offer - including Va-Va Voom... a peach concoction laced with vodka. Post 11, all shooter's 'n cocktails come at 2 for the price of 1. Life is beautiful :) Smart casual - sneakers and t-shirts would be a no-no.

Superb Italian Restaurant

by colbeck100 about BICE at Hilton Jumeirah Beach

The BICE is calm and welcoming. I worried that it may have been stuffy but the experience was one of casual dining at its best. The food is very very good. The service is precise and friendly without being intrusive. I enjoyed all the courses. There is a good wine list that represented good value for money. The room is dimly lit and this gives it a special atmosphere.

Altogether quite memorable. Lamb chops served on base of beautifully cooked greens. The lamb was done just as we had asked and served so nicely. The portions were of a good size (not nouvelle cuisine)

Sweet trolley was very effective in tempting my wife when I did not expect her to indulge!
