i have been to dubai long time ago, now there are alot of new things to see... as i have been told by people who went there recently. so kindly give me list of must see...

is dubai metro operational? will it be helpful for me to move around? thanx for the help. cheers

I assume you'll have luggage so my advice is taxi from the airport to the hotel. There's a Dh20 surcharge for airport taxis so the total cost I guess would be about Dh40.

Dubai Metro Red Line is currently part-operating with eleben stations open and the rest are due to open in February. It's an excellent system and useful to get around but only if it runs to where you want to go!

For suggestions of must-sees I suggest you look at our Dubai pages here on VT and take your pick from all the information there.

Must see's, the newly opened Burj Khalifi which is the tallest building in the world. Its in the area you are staying.

Go to the Mall of the Emirates, visit the Dubai Fort, Museum and Creek and Bastakiya Quaters areas.Take a boat trip down Dubai Creek while you are in this area.

Go to the Gold Souk and surrounding streets for shopping.

Also make sure you head to the Jumeirah beach and walk along for a while. You will come across the Burj Dubai (the great sail shaped hotel) and down further is the Marina area which is good. I would also suggest a trip to Wild Wadi waterpark which is in this vicinity.

Taxis are cheap and convenient.

Travel Tips for Dubai

Get connected! - mobile phone service for visitors

by JessH

In today's hi-tech society, we're all connected - with wires, wireless, high speed, digital, etc.
So if you want to be reachable while on holiday in Dubai, or especially if you're here on business, here's some info on how to "get connected":

The 2 telephone providers in the UAE are called ETISALAT and DU.
They both provide a pre-paid / pay-as-you-go mobile phone service.

You just have to visit any Etisalat or DU office with your passport (they need a passport copy & a copy of the page with your UAE visit visa) and the fee is about Dhs 100.- You then immediately get your sim card, can activate it and start making & receiving calls.

Phone cards to re-charge the mobile are avaible at petrol stations & supermarkets throughout Dubai (e.g. card for Dhs 30.-) You can also re-charge your card by paying cash into Etisalat's public payment machines, that are situated in most major shopping malls (1 US Dollar = 3.67 Dirhams).

Wasel Prepaid GSM Service: an initial subscription charge, inclusive of connection charges, 1 year rental & the cost of the WASEL GSM Card enables subscribers to receive incoming calls on their mobile phones during the one year validity period. An initial credit of Dhs 10.- is provided to enable outgoing calls. The WASEL system (pre-paid by ETISALAT) even gives you international roaming! So you can use it also after leaving the UAE (if you charge it up beforehand). The card has to be renewed every year, if you want to continue using the number.
Another advantage is that WASEL customers can dial emergency numbers 998, 999 and 997 free of charge.

MORE INFO ON THE CARD:
http://www.etisalat.co.ae (then click "Travellers", then "Visitors")

CLICK HERE for more info on the Pay-as-you-go Service by DU.

You can also apply for your "Ahlan" Prepaid Mobile Package at Etisalat Kiosks at Dubai Airport, and also in Dubai Duty Free. "Ahlan" only costs 90 Dhs (US$25.00) & is valid for 3 months.

Try the Human Pretzel Poses in Fitness First

by rachelleiris

“If you are still alive, you can challenge yourself to do the next yoga pose”.. that’s how our über flexible yoga instructor tries to lighten things up when he sees our faces disgruntle with confusion. But after surprising ourselves with being able to execute those human pretzel poses, we come out of the class rejuvenated – ready to take on yet another physical challenge – which could either be in the form of body jam, body combat, salsa or maybe marathon eating, hehe.

In not so many words, Fitness First is a must for a Dubai resident (Read: Going to the gym is really an effective stress-buster). But for tourists who have an international Fitness First passport, you can just pop in anytime, make yourselves at home and enjoy all the facilities (unlimited coffee, wifi, sauna among other things) and classes that you don't wanna miss even if you're away from home.

Buy with comfort

by solopes about Madinat Jumeirah

Simulating an old bazaar, many narrow corridors lead to a complex of shops, dominated by local (or almost...) crafts. With the advantage of the air-conditioning, their drawback against the real souks are the prices, as expected.

If you like Karaoke....

by nattybabe about Harry Ghatto's

We went to Harry Ghatto's briefly after dinner on a Thursday night. I think that you may have to be either very drunk or LOVE karaoke to enjoy yourself here. The drinks were slightly overpriced (but then again so is everywhere else!), you had to wait an hour to get your turn on Karaoke and the bar is quite small so you'll find yourself in the middle of a crowd or up against a wall. Personally I think it may be a location for the end of the night or after a brunch to fully realise your singing potential better.

Location: Emirates Towers
Theme: Japanese Karaoke Bar
Pro or Con (depending on your point of view!): No smoking inside.

Rent-a-car

by najamrulz

Getting a car on rent is no problem in Dubai. Many of world's leading car rental companies such as Hertz, Avis and Budget etc. have their presence in Dubai. But thier rentals are expensive for sure. So there are other companies which are not very well known but they have reasonable rental tariffs.

Chauffeur drive cars in Dubai are expensive. But you can get a car for self drive at reasonable rental. Rental tariffs vary from company to company. I visited different rent-a-car companies in Dubai and found that the rental tariff offered by Acquire rent-a-car is very reasonable.

They just charge AED 110 ( US $ 28) for latest model Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and many others with free mileage and insurance. They have different sizes of cars available in various categories at very reasonable rates. Staff at my hotel also suggested me to hire services of Acquire but I perefed to use buses because of my tight budget.
