Advice wanted please re location Sheraton Jumeirah
by emilyaq
Hi there
I would really appreciate some advice. My husband and I are planning our first trip to Dubai. We are arriving on Dec 27th for 10 nights. We have 3 children aged 11, 4 and 20 months. Ideally we would like to be beach based but we will want to venture out to visit some of the tourist attractions.
We have found a lovley apartment that is within our budget, It is described as being near the Shearaton Jumeirah Beach, within easy walking distance of the local (free) beach.
Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Emily

Hi Emily, welcome to VT.
I guess the apartment will be somewhere in Dubai Marina, probably the Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) part which is across the road from Sheraton and the beach.
If you go to my Dubai Hotel Tips, the first one has photos of the Sheraton and The Walk at JBR. In my Dubai Restaurant Tips you'll find various pics of Dubai Marina, The Walk at JBR etc.
All of that is in New Dubai, where all the new development you'll have read about is located. The original city is about 30 kilometres away. Plenty of taxis around the area so you can travel about sightseeing and the Metro has stations in Dubai Marina.
Have a look through our Dubai pages here on VT for info, ideas, things to see and do, tours etc. Click on our names or use the search panel to go to our Home Pages then follow the links.

Travel Tips for Dubai
The Dubai Shopping Festival
by Amisha074
The DSF was initiated in 1996 to bring in tourists. The economy is no longer oil driven and depends on trade, tourism and, since recently, real estate.
The DSF (12 Jan -12 Feb, 2005) is the best time to visit Dubai to take in the carnival atmosphere. But the bargains aren't really that great. There are quite a few cultural shows and lots of activities for children.
Personally, I don't enjoy the festival much. The city gets much too crowded and there's lots of traffic on the streets. I'd recommend visiting Dubai at either the end or the beginning of the festival so you can spend some time sans the festival and see what Dubai is like during the rest of the year.
Islam
by Nemoa
As you will probably know, Dubai is a muslim country and despite being less conservative than others due to its very cosmopolitan population and culture, still IS a muslim country.
The best example are the dozens of mosques you find everywhere. Every little block of houses has its own. You will see dozens of them as you walk on the streets.
If you prefer to pray at home, it is possible too !!
Every hotel has a qibla in the fashion of a sticker that indicates the direction to Mecca so you know where to face is you want to pray.
The Islam is based in five pillars of the faith being:
1- Shaddah or the profession of faith: to acknowledge that there is not good but God and Mohammed is His Messenger.
2-Salat or the 5 prayers a day: at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunsent and twilight.
3-Zakat: which means to share a part of your income with the poor.
4-Sawm : or fasting during the month of Ramadan, which conmemorates the revelation of the faith to Mohammed by God.
No food between dawn and sunset and no sex and no alcohol. Pretty tough...
5- Haj: or the pilgrimage to Mecca that every muslim must do once in their lifetime.
Is is very important to understand and to respect the religion of the locals, so get used to the Islam precepts and try to respect the local customs whenever possible.
Deira City Centre
by Willettsworld
Opened in November 1995, Deira City Centre is one of Dubai's most popular shopping malls as it's location is good to get to from both Deira and Bur Dubai. It has over 300 shops that range from men and women's western fashion shops such as Burberry, DKNY, GAP, Levis, Next, River Island etc to major department and food retailers such as Carrefour, Woolworths, Debenhams and Ikea. The mall also has local and Indian fashion and textile shops, sports shops such as Reebok and Adidas and a few electronics and lots of jewellery stores. The food court is well worth a visit for a break and rest whilst shopping.
Quick night on the town
by joel_europa about Rock Bottom
English:
I thought Dubai looked very nice and the city was very clean. I stayed for a day in Dubai as I waited for a flight to my next destination. I took a little nap and I then went out to party before my plane left. I went to the club “Rock Bottom,” which was very nice. There all sorts of different people, and the live show of what seemed to be a Russian girl and possibly an African singing popular Hip Hop songs from artists such as “Nelly” was interesting and the crowd enjoyed it.
