MY name is Lim....Michael Lim. As The Travelling Gourmet I have scoured the world for the best in food, wine and gastronomy and I found all that and more when I was privileged to attend the 1st Grand Gourmet Summit in the Middle East held in the Grand Hyatt Dubai. Over 18 masterchefs and winemakers from the 7 seas presented and taught us all about food, caviar, chocolate, cheeses, honey, champagne, and lots more. It was a culinary rendezvous to remember. Every day, I awoke from peaceful slumber and dreams of champagne and caviar in my luxurious suite on the Grand floor at 0600, to amble down to the high tech Gym. Doing my Ballet exercises while watching the sunrise over the City of Gold is an exquisite pleasure to be treasured. After my Ballet and aerobic exercises plus a swim or two in the superb ,yes, dare I say it "Grand" resort pool in the style that Haytt is famous for, with lots of luscious foliage and date palms, as well as waterfalls, it was off to the lap pool for serious swimming. The best part of every morning was Breakfast to feed the inner man in the Market Cafe. Here, I enjoyed exquisite Arabic and Indian food as well as my friend Chef Heinz von Holzen's Balinese specialities. The kitchens are well run to German standards of efficiency by Masterchef Max Burkhalter, whose gregarious grin is only matched by his cooking skills. He told me one day in German, "Why go to the Banana when you can come here!" The Banana is an insider reference to the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. If there is one restaurant you must try here, it is the Pepper Crab where Arabian guests have fallen madly in love with food from Singapore. It is 90% authentic, which is good, as Dubai is thousands of kilometers from Asia. I loved to attend the Cooking classes held by Masterchefs in the state of the art high tech Kitchen Studio, and get this, guests are actually encouraged and invited on stage to cook Hands-On with the masterchefs. From boiling, steaming, cutting and presentation, it is a blast for the novice cook or home chef to work with great chefs of the world side by side. As I am a trained Chef myself, I can tell you frankly that the esprit de corp and camaraderis is just like that found in the Army as we work, create and bond together as one happy band of brothers. A gentle recommendation for food and wine lovers everywhere, please go to Dubai for the 2nd Grand Gourmet Summit on 6 November if you adore good food and wine. In the immortal movie Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart, Captain Louis Renault, French Prefect of Police asks Rick Blaine (Bogart), "What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?" Coolly and nonchalantly, Rick says softly in the style that Clint Eastwood would later adopt in his Dirty Harry movies, "My health..the waters." Louis exclaims, "Waters, what waters! We're in the desert!" Without batting an eye, Rick says in the Godfather of one-liners, "I was misinformed." Those who think that Dubai is a scorching desert with sand, camels and not much else are...can I say it, "Misinformed." Bon appetit! Enjoy! {:-)
Nice hotel; equally nice options exist
by TripAdvisor Member A frequent and discerning traveller
This hotel is quite lovely, especially the swimming pool and it has an extensive array of food options. However, it is quite isolated, which means that one must rely quite exclusively on the services provided by the hotel.
Taxis in Dubai are relatively inexpensive, so it is easy and cheap to get around to other places. It may also be helpful to note that in Dubai, the alcohol is sold only at hotel bars and in some restaurants (licensed restaurants).
Another Hyatt (the Park Hyatt Dubai) has recently opened near the Dubai Marina, which is trendy, modern and gorgeous. We went there just to eat, and it was absolutely spectacular. The Park Hyatt is more centrally located, and it seems to be about the same price as the Grand Hyatt.
Well I would go again !!!

Stayed at the Grand Hyatt 4 days in Jan and can confirm like most of the other reviewers that it is an Excellent Hotel ! Points of note......
Hotel and Rooms very Clean, our room was on the 9th floor overlooking the Pool and Creek, no traffic or building noise. The room was large and had a large bed, excellent marble bathroom and great walk in shower.
Staff very polite and helpful and made you feel welcome.... arrived to find we had been given a smoking room, went to reception and they gave us another room and sent a Bellhop with us to move our case's straight away. On night after returning from dinner we found that we could not get into our room, we called reception from a phone in the hallway and in a short space of time security arrived and unlocked the door, apparently we had left our Safe open with some cash and cameras inside, when the maid came in to turn down the room she phone security whom double locked the door, I was very impressed!
Didn't use many of the facilities in the hotel but was told the SPA was excellent and the pool was good. Plenty of good restaurants in the Hotel but make sure you book in advance especially Thurs and Friday which is their weekend. There is a 'Market Cafe' which is a self service mix of Italian, Indian & Arabic foods and also a good Coffee Shop.
Shopping in Dubai not for the faint hearted!!!
The Wadi Mall / Planet Hollywood is a 10min walk
The Mall of the Emirates is a 20min Taxi ride and costs approx 36dhs - Wear comfortable shoes !
I would certainly go again, hope this helps.
Great hotel

Stayed at the Grand Hyatt in January 2006. Read all of the reviews before booking. Hotel is definitely 5 star. Stayed in an emiri suite so free transfers from the airport. Suite was large enough to accomodate my 3 kids as well. This is a important as Jumeirah hotels have now change their room policy (2 adults and only 1 child - even in a suite). Suite has a bedroom, dining room/lounge,a small kitchen and a guest toilet.
Modern interior design.
Pool area is probably one of the best I have seen in a dubai hotel, especially for kids under 10 (beats going to wild wadi).
Staff were also very polite and efficient, which would suggest that things have improved since the initial reviews.
Would definetly recommend this hotel to all.
Excellent value for money

We've just returned from a stay at the Grand Hyatt and cannot speak more highly both of the rooms and the service. We had two large interconnecting creek view rooms for a family of 5. The rooms had plenty of space with brilliant bathrooms. The staff were always willing to help and the food, both varity and quality was excallent. The pool was was very clean with plenty of lounger. The spa was of very high standard. It was very central, near the town, airport and the beach so ideally locted. We would definity book there again.

Grand Hyatt Dubai & MIX nightclub
by Sylar
I am thinking of booking this hotel for my honeymoon in March
Was wondering would you recommend it?
Also, what is the MIX nightclub like? Ive heard good reviews. Do they have nights where they play RnB/Hip Hop only?
Re: Grand Hyatt Dubai & MIX nightclub

Hello from Dubai :-)
Well, I haven't really been to MIX because I don't like the music they play there, which tends to actually be RnB & Hip Hop, plus Persian House, Dance, etc.
As a matter of fact, most nightclubs in Dubai have an RnB and Hip Hop night on Wednesdays, but I believe MIX plays that genre more than just once a week :-)
The Grand Hyatt Hotel is gigantic and very impressive, in a good and central location. I'm sure you'd enjoy your stay there (the restaurants are all quite pricey but very good!)

The Grand Hyatt's very nice. MIX is past its sell-by date though, and is frequented by a lot of hookers. Not really the ideal spot for a honeymooning couple, wot? :) For your dose of R'nB, The Apartment at Jumeirah Beach Hotel should do nicely. Ciao!
