Booking a hotel without paying upfront?
by aiat_gamer
Is it possible to book a hotel in advance and pay for it upon the arrival? My touring agency sucks and I don't think they are able to book the hotel that want, I do have a credit card but I don't want to pay for hotel in advance. I saw some sties saying that I could do just that but are they reliable?

We use www.booking.com a lot. It is a very reliable site. You book and use your credit card as security but no payment is made until (depends on the accommodation booked) either you arrive or you check-out. We use our card to book, and then often pay in cash. Other times, we've used either the card used to book or else another card.

Thanx. I am actually using my brother`s credit card(with his permission of course) but I rather pay in cash upon arrival at the hotel. Would that pose any problems?

I find the easiest way is to contact the hotel direct, I email them and make the booking myself, no middle person.

I'd book directly on the hotel's website. You may have a problem not having a credit card upon arrival. You can pay in cash but almost all hotels require a credit card to use for incidental expenses during your stay. They may let you put up cash as a deposit towards the incidentals. I'd confirm with the hotel directly.

We have used our credit card to book with www.booking.com for a reservation for our son and also for ourselves. He has then rolled up and paid cash, no problem. Same with us. They still have the credit card details for any incidentals, if need be. Never had any incidentals, so cannot comment.

Hawkhead - he's not using his own cc so they can not just charge to the card on record. They'll usually need to swipe it. Haven't been to a place where they haven't. Have just been to 6 hotels in 3 countries within a month and they did it each time including 2 where I had already pre-paid the whole stay. It may be possible to leave a cash deposit. Doesn't matter whether you use the incidentals or not either. It's possible if it's a hostel type or lower-star accommodation, that they don't need a cc.

Well, all I can say is to reiterate our experience as in my post above. We have used our own credit card to book for our son AND he has been able to both check in and pay cash with no problems. I cannot remember having to even swipe our card when we, without son, have checked in. All perfectly respectable 3 star and up hotels, not hostels or the like. Never stay in hostels. Even the place we use in London doesn't swipe a card...... your experience is obviously different from ours, so perhaps the OP should check with the hotel directly.

Travel Tips for Dubai
General Dubai Info
by nattybabe
Hi!
1. I'm not sure about package deals for Dubai - I've found that everything tends to be cheaper by booking once you're here.
2. There are several places which you can get a triple room or an apartment - Oasis Beach Towers (apartments) in JBR would be a good start. Look on booking.com etc for other options.
3. There is only 1 hop-on-hop off bus and that's a tourist bus which takes you to the sights. You buy a one day ticket at AED220 (approx AUD$62) and it goes all over town. Quite good if you want to see everything. Don't rely on it as transport though, just as a day out seeing things.
4. Search the accommodation websites like booking.com, agoda, asia rooms etc. They all have good rates. Hotels over here are second to none. 5 star MEANS 5 star! (you pay for it too unfortunately).
5. Taxi fare from the airport depends on where you stay. They all have a AED20 flag fall ($5.50) e.g. to Deira (creek) apporox AED40, City and Burj Khalifa AED50, Jumeirah (Burj Dubai area) AED70, Marina AED90. A hotel transfer will be about AED150 each way. Rip off. Just get a taxi - they are safe and you can get a family (pink with a lady driver) taxi if you're worried. Taxis are cheap as well. A normal taxi is AED3.50 flag fall and it's unusual for a taxi to cost more than AED50 ($13) each way (from Marina to the city (20km) for example).
6. Tips: taxis just a couple of dihrams or the small change, restaurants will depend on what's already included but 10-20% is normal. Bell boy? Not sure! AED5-10? Tipping is a way of life in Dubai.
7. Money changers over here are plentiful and rarely charge commission. The current rate is AED3.6 to the Aussie dollar.
8. Tours - try North tours. They tend to be cheaper than the others for the same thing. You shouldn't have to pay more than AED180 per person for a desert safari. Others charge AED300!

Rhythm of life
by Gard
We soon found out that the rhythm of life is quite different in this part of the world compared to what we are used to in Norway. Around here we work from 8 am to 4 pm and then you go home. In Dubai the workday has been adapted to the weather amongst other things. Many places were open in the morning and then they closed for about 4 hours in the middle of the day and then they reopened in the afternoon and stayed open quite long. In the period when places were closed we could see people relaxing in the shadow of a trees or on shaded benches.
Send a Postcard, Have a Chance to Be a Winner
by Rinjani
Postcard Millionnaire.
Send your friends postcards and have an opportunity to win 500,000 Dirham.
Sounds like a dream, isn’t it??
Instead of sending the conventional postcard, people are encouraged to buy a pack of postcards and send it to friends or relatives. One pack contains of 4 postcards and sold at 30 Dirham. You don’t need to buy stamps, since each postcard is paid stamp, and you can even send them for people abroad. Just pay attention where you drop the postcard in the post box. There are two post boxes, for delivery in Dubai and abroad. The postcard packs is usually about Dubai heritage, culture or natural scenery.
Once you purchase the postcards, You will be given two number sections. The first section is an instant scratch & win section. The second section has a ticket number on top of the coupon.
The interesting part is, even you are not residing in Dubai, you can also take part. If you visit Dubai, you can buy the postcards and send them to your friends. After that, You just need to check your number in the website (hopefully you are the lucky one : ) )

Elegant Shopping Centre
by MM212 about Burjuman
Burjuman is a great shopping mall with both high end and middle of the range shops. It is divided into two connected sections, the old Burjuman and the new Burjuman. The new section is more high end and elegant (Breguet watches, Prada, Boss, Diesel) and includes some of the nice cafés and restaurants as well (Paul, Hédiard, etc.). There is also a Virgin Store.
Public Buses in Dubai
by Waleed1982
The public buses in Dubai are a convenient , fast and cheap way to going around the city.
Buses run on scheduled route, and cover almost the whole big city and its outward extentions off-the Sheikh Zayed Highway . Buses run to and from the airport as well.
Get a local bus network map from Al Gubeyba bus station in Bur Dubai district in Dubai, or simply download it from the internet website listed in here.
