Genuine Italian at The Walk
by colin_bramso about Scoozi
Scoozi serves the real thing when it comes to pizza and pasta, using the right wheat, the right ingredients to give an authentic Italian flavour.
They have a branch at The Walk, Jumeirah Beach Residence at Dubai Marina with casual dining in a good atmosphere, plenty of tables inside or outside. I can't resist Pizza Romana - a thin crisp base with tomato, cheese, anchovies, black olives, capers. I can also recommend Scoozi's Spaghetti with spinach & cream and if you like meat the scalopini valdostana, which is veal with mushroom & mozzarella cheese and vegetables.
Construction problems.
by colin_bramso
People often ask in the Forum whether their hotel will be affected by the massive construction that's happening in Dubai. Construction behind the string of hotels along Jumeirah Beach - including Sheraton, Hilton, Le Meridien Mina Seyahi, Royal Meridien, One & Only Royal Mirage and others - has largely been finished and there's now a very pleasant promenade of shops and restaurants.
However, there is construction all over Dubai and things move very quickly so it's best to ask the specific question in the Forum about your hotel before you book it.
The photo of the Sheraton Jumeirah Beach shows the Jumeirah Beach Residence development towering over the hotel. The other photos show Le Meridien Mina Seyahi an Hilton Jumeirah. As you can see, the construction work is just about finished.
Probably our favourite Indian restaurant
by colin_bramso about India Palace @ The Walk JBR
One of our favourite Indian restaurants has always been India Palace at Ibn Battuta Mall. Now they have opened a more stylish restaurant at The Walk, Jumeirah Beach Residence in Dubai Marina.
The food is just as good and it's served in a more upmarket restaurant - you can dress casually and many do but smart casual is more appropriate.
Excellent food, excellent service, a nice atmosphere in a very pleasant location and inexpensive - what more could you want! We've tried many different dishes from the extensive menu but usually settle on our favourites, chicken biryani for Geina, lamb rogan josh for me and a dish of makai khumb masala, sweetcorn and mushrooms in a spicy sauce, to share.
Not really Mexican
by colin_bramso about On The Border
The restaurant is in the very popular The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence.
If you're looking for real Mexican food you won't find it here, this is another American fast food joint masquerading as a Mexican restaurant.
Having said that, it's as good as any I've found in town for so-called Tex-Mex food.
Chilli is noticeable by its abscence in the dishes, so again if you don't like your food too spicy this is for you. Mexican is one of my favourite cuisines and I do like it spicy, and at least I could add that with the complimentary salsa and the chilli sauce supplied, both of which had the necessary heat.
Service is fast, friendly, knowledgeable, as good as any in Dubai.
You have a choice of outdoor tables or two levels inside. They offer the usual Tex-Mex menu of fajitas, burritos, empenadas and so on.
Our favourite - home made pasta!
by colin_bramso about La Dolce Vita
You can always taste the difference when pasta is home made and we've found it at last in Dubai. The pizzas have the genuine Italian flavour too, and that's not always the case with pizza.
As a result, La Dolce Vita is our favourite non-hotel Italian restaurant.
It's in Dubai Marina's Jumeirah Beach Residence district, on The Walk, is recently opened but already hugely popular.
Sit outside if you can find a table, unfortunately the inside decor is not good at all and somewhat spoils the experience. Outside you're also in the buzz of The Walk with Dubai's cosmopolitan population strolling by.
Good service, even some Italians, and an extensive menu of pizza, pasta, salads and secondi platti. The highlight is the pasta because it's home made and the risotto because it's simply the best in town. A couple of other Italian restaurants offer genuine pizzas, but these are as good as any.
Fettucini Alfredo, pasta with a cream & mushroom sauce, and spaghetti bolognese, the old favourite, are both excellent.
The risotto is the best in town, especially Risotto al Funghi with a creamy mushroom & artichoke sauce, and Risotto Pollo with chicken & cheese.
There's a small but good selection of pizzas. Our favourite is the basic pizza margheritta with tomato, cheese and basil. We ask them to add anchovies to it. Unlike many restaurants, La Dolce Vita use the correct tomatoes, without which Italian food does not taste genuine, and fresh herbs.
Like the pasta, the pizzas are highly recommended.
If you feel like a meat dish then I can recommend Escalope Milanese which is breadcrumbed beef served with saute vegetables and a choice of potatoes.
A small but important touch...ask for parmesan cheese and it's not dried and shaken from a container, it's shaved fresh parmesan.

Post Offices
by oi0io
Hello! Are post offices all over Dubai? I am interested in mailing out postcards to friends and family while I am there. How much is international postage for a postcards? Where is the least expensive place to buy postcards or would I have to haggle for these? Cheers!
Re: Post Offices
by colin_bramso
Hi, welcome to VT.
No, post offices are few and far between. But you can get stamps in various places in shopping malls and they'll post the cards for you too.
The least expensive places to buy the postcards are in the local shopping areas such as Naif Road, Al Faheidi Street etc
Where will you be staying?
Re: Post Offices
by oi0io
I will be staying around the Jumeirah Beach Residence if that is any help. I will definitely check out the streets you've mentioned. Cheers!

Ask your hotel reception. We always get stamps from them and they always post the cards for us, so you don't need a post office.

Usually I buy postcards in the small bookstores attached to SPINNEY'S Supermarkets. There are many of these supermarkets all over town.
Oasis Beach Hotel, Jumeriah Beach
by Heavens-Mirror
Hi there
does anyone know what the Oasis Beach hotel is like in Jumeriah Beach?
It seems to be the best price for Dubai, and id really like to know whether its close to the beach, near some nice bars and restaurants and also shopping centres?
It will be for me and my fiance for next yr.
Thanks in advance,
Stacey xxx

Yes,
the Oasis Beach Hotel is great value for money. It's one of my favourites and many of my friends & family have stayed there.
Just make sure to book a sea-view room so you won't be disturbed by any ongoing construction in the Dubai Marina-area.
The Hotel has the largest/longest pool-bar in Dubai, a gorgeous grass area and nice beach (directly on the beach). There are some very nice restaurants (like "Singapora" & "Bazaar") and a lively nightspot called "Charlie Parrots".
Check this link (copy & paste) for all info and my photos:

No shoppiong-centres in that area of town. But Mall of the Emirates and Ibn Batutta Mall are only a short taxi-drive away.
Hope this helps,
Jess ('c',)
RE: Oasis Beach Hotel, Jumeriah Beach
by colin_bramso
As Jess said, it's right on the beach. It has 5-star hotels all around it with plenty of bars, restaurants etc. Oasis Beach is a 3.5 to 4 star hotel, which is why it's cheaper than the others, but it's good value.
It's across the road from Dubai Marina, which has restaurants and a few shops. The nearest mall is Ibn Battuta, next nearest is Mall of the Emirates. Both are easy and cheap to reach by taxi.
By next year the major construction behind it, Jumeirah Beach Residence, will be finished so that problem will have disappeared. You should make sure you have an ocean side room though.

Getting to "The Walk" in JBR
by sognodolce
I happened to hear about "The Walk" in JBR area. I would like to drop by there and look around when I visit Dubai in June. Where exactly is "The Walk" located? Can anybody tell me a landmark nearby the area? Is it near from Mall of Emirates? Also, is it near from Jumeirah Mosque?
Thank you in advance.
Re: Getting to "The Walk" in JBR
by colin_bramso
It's at Jumeirah Beach Residence which is part of Dubai Marina. It's not far from Mall of the Emirates, maybe a ten minute taxi ride. It's much further, about 20 km, from Jumeirah Mosque.
The Walk is about 2 kilometres long and runs past the beach hotels such as Sheraton Jumeirah, Hilton Jumeirah, Ritz Carlton etc.

You're welcome :-)
The Walk is best after dark so I suggest you go there early evening.

Thanks Amir! Now, it is clear to me where The Walk is!
Re: Getting to "The Walk" in JBR

As Colin said, go after dark.
Not just because it's busier at that time, but also because of the heat.
Today it's already 44 degrees celsius so in June it will be a bit hotter than that.

Search for a small Chinese restaurant there. Eat all you can and you want for 70AED! Friend rice is so yummy!
