Royal Caribbean Brilliance of the Seas Cruise - Dubai from Birmingham Airport

by alisononthego

Hi,
Has anyone been to Dubai this year and flown from Birmingham Airport? If so, did you fly direct and with which Airline did you fly? Have you been on the Brilliance of the Seas ship around the Emirates? We have booked this cruise for next March (2011) with Royal Caribbean (cruise and flight and transfers) and have been told that the flight may not be a direct flight from Birmingham Airport (uk) to Dubai. We can see that Emirates Airlines fly there daily, direct but the travel agent says they cannot confirm flights until mid May. Has anyone else had this problem when booking this package many months in advance. Think its only this year that Royal Caribbean have done this cruise. Any information and advice welcomed. Thanks a lot.

We've flown between Dubai and Birmingham a few times this year with Emirates, but not as part of a package.

Yours seems to be a combined fly/cruise package, and as Birmingham-Dubai is more expensive than Heathrow-Dubai I guess it may well have the cheapest flights the agent can find as part of the package.

Hi,

The reason your travel agent can't see the flights yet is because the flights aren't loaded into the reservation system yet. Air travel cannot be booked more than 10 - 11 months ahead (sometimes 9 months depending on the month of travel). The flights will definately be loaded next month or May.

I am pretty confident that the direct flights will still be there, so you don't have to worry. There are two daily flights currently and if they are cutting down due to low capacity, they'll cut down to one daily flight first before cancelling that route.

I hope this helps.

Travel Tips for Dubai

Mixing

by solopes

Nationalities, cultures, styles, everything is mixing in Dubai. To attract people is the goal, and everybody searching for an opportunity may have his chance. Construction grows everywhere, the balance between tradition and modernity is seriously compromised. I don't really know if the Dubai that I left was the same that I met two weeks before, or something different.

I don't know if I can recognize Dubai if and when I will visit again.

Summer and Winter Packing List

by Rinjani

Summer and Winter

It depends, if you come to Dubai for shopping, bring extra suitcase. Or you can also buy it here in Dubai. If you don't fancy shopping, light luggage is allright. Summer

Comfortable clothes and shoes.
A good quality of sun glasses
Bottle water (always carry in your bag to avoid dehydration)
Sunscreen above 30 SPF is recommended
Beach kits (sarongs, swimwear, sandals,etc)
Smart casual dress if you plan to go for fine dining.

Winter

Sunscreen
A good quality of sun Glasses
Jacket or sweater
Comfortable clothes and shoes
Pashmina
Smart casual clothes (if you plan to fine dining)
Beach kits (sarongs, swimwear, etc) Sunscreen
Moisturizer
After sun lotion
Panadol Digital camera
Film is easy to find here, and once you develop the film here, usually the shop will give you another film roll for free. Good bargain, isn't it :) Winter

It's recommended to bring hiking shoes or any outdoor equipment. Winter is the best time for doing outdoor activity in Dubai.

Summer

Well....beach equipment and comfortable shoes are good enough. Summer is not really good time for any outdoor activities beside going to the beach. CREDIT CARD, CREDIT CARD, CREDIT CARD!!!

It's always usefull, especially when you come around Dubai Summer Surprise or Dubai Shopping festival.

Mercato

by Rinjani about Mercato Mal

Mercato, the favorite shopping mal for people who stay in Jumeirah, is located in Jumeirah Beach Road. The design of the shopping mal is quite unique and it will be a great idea to bring your camera along.

In my opinion, enjoying the mal atmosphere is better than serious hunting for shopping. Except, off course the sale season :) The mall includes a wide range of well known stores with Home Centre, Virgin Megastore, Spinney’s and Century Cinema as the anchor stores. Mercato is positioned as a destination mall offering a holistic lifestyle experience under one roof.
There is also Starbuck, Costa and my favorit place is Paul (Don't forget to taste its almond chocolate croissant, it's yummi)

Some other brands such as Next, Massimo, Mango, Areej, Top Shop, etc are also available. In Dubai Summer Surprise or Dubai Shopping Festival, with AED 1000, you will get a lot of fancy stuffs. They will give you up to 60% discount. But who can ask people to keep their credit card while so many fancy stuffs look so georgeous.

Dinner on the creek

by Quero about Yacht Club

The best feature of the restaurant of the Yacht Club, which is open to the public, is the al-fresco terrace overlooking Dubai Creek. The food is pretty good, too. Keep in mind that what locals consider local food generally consists of highly-seasoned Indian-style dishes. Alcoholic beverages are served at this restaurant as well. This is an upscale place, but people were dressed fairly casually. Of course you should wear a proper shirt and trousers--shorts and revealing attire should be avoided, even in the hottest of seasons.

Taxi in Dubai

by BorneoGrrl

You won't have a problem in getting a taxi in Dubai because there must be hundreds if not thousands of them in this city. The taxis are metered and comfortable with air-conditioning to cool your from the summer heat & humidity.

However, be aware that some taxi drivers try to cheat visitors of extra dirhams by driving you a long way before reaching your destination. It happened to me and I had a arguement with one driver. I had another arguement with another taxi driver because he didn't want to take me to my hotel which was nearby (he preferred more fare of course). I couldn't walk home because I had done a bit of shopping, but of course he didn't understand that
