Visa

by shannon44

Hello,

I am travelling from the UK to Jakarta in a couple of weeks but I have over a ten hour stop-off in Dubai on my scheduled flight/route.

I just wondered if I am going to leave the airport, will I need a visa?

Thanks,
Shannon

Re: Visa

But if I am not staying in Dubai for 24 hours do I need a visa?

Re: Visa

by cochinjew

I travel on an Australian passport and I arrived at Dubai from Colombo and went on to Paris 18 hours later, no visa was necessary and I was able to leave the airport and visit the city.
Most Western Europeans and Aus USA NZ Japan I would imagine would not need a visa for a short stay in UAE. Someone who lives in Dubai and knowledgeable about current visa requirements may add more information.

I also travel on an Aussie passport and the immigration in Dubai will stamp your passport (this is the equivalent of the visa)when you leave the airport and again when you return. You only need to pay if you are staying for the longer time.

Shannon, it doesn't matter how long you're staying, if you leave the airport it means you have to pass through Immigration and therefore you need a visa.

As Jay said, some passports get an automatic visa-on-arrival stamped in them at the Immigration desks. The list this applies to has extended to 36 countries. You haven't told us what passport you travel on.

VISA: an endorsement made by an authorized representative of one country upon a passport issued by another, permitting the passport holder entry into or transit through the country making the endorsement. The Airport Immigration Stamp Is a VISA!!

Travel Tips for Dubai

Discreet quarters

by solopes

In a city where everything needs to be the bigger, the most outstanding, the most expensive, it's possible to see some quarters in construction (of course!) but... out of context. They are modest, though carefully planned with interesting architecture.

Already aiming to middle price segment???

Funky air-waves during the heat-waves... 104.8FM

by JessH

Channel 4FM is the 2nd English radio channel in the UAE, launched by Ajman Independant Studios.

Tune into 104.8FM wherever you are:
Within the UAE you can listen to the shows live on their website
Throughout the week, the DJs keep us entertained with various shows for listening at home, in your office, your car or providing funky weekend music for your house party! Quite often these "local celebrities" will appear in nightclubs for special nights & lend their musical & entertainment skill for a night or two.

Also, listen out for updates on special promotions at various restaurants, and what's happening at the numerous night clubs! There are also numerous competitions to win anything from cinema tickets, to free dinners, to VIP tables in nightclubs, to concert tickets & even holidays! (in May 2007 I won a dinner for 2 in a fancy restaurant... culinary VT Tip will, of course, follow ;-)

One of my favourite shows is *Total Request Lunch* and also *Neal & Vicky in the morning* are also pretty entertaining. And on this station, you'll also hear our friend Josh Anderson "working his magic" ;-)

It's also amusing to listen to the Western radio DJ's desperately trying to be funny & slightly "naughty", without being suspended for breaking the UAE's media-censorship laws... In fact, you'll notice that all songs played on UAE radio are heavily censored. Swear words, sex, drugs, guns, and certain slang for certain body parts are all cut-out of the song... which makes most Hip Hop & Rap Songs sound like the CD is skipping, gap after gap after gap! Why do they even bother playing Missy Elliot, M&M, etc.?

A very useful number to call with information on the roads of the UAE is:
Traffic & Travel Jam-Line: 050-746 1048.

Egypt transplanted to Dubai

by uglyscot about Wafi centre

This is one of the most expensive of the shopping centres in Dubai. It is designed with an Ancient Egyptian theme, glass pyramid with copies of tomb paintings in stained glass, statues of pharaohs, columns etc.
There are restaurants; a gym , and cinema.
The shops tend to be more of the designer label type [e.g. Yves St Laurent], Electronics and gold.
Dubai is a duty-free zone, but it is still wise to shop around to get bargains. quite a lot

Drinking & dining beside snow!

by Durfun about Apres

Ski Dubai has sessions that last upto 2200 & 2300 hours. If you've accompanied someone to the slopes but are not skiing yourself, why not look around in the shops & then settle for some drinks, food, and dessert at Apres, overlooking the slopes.

The place has huge glass windows offering panaramic views of the ski slopes, including the nursery slopes & ski park.

There is a bar, some chic leather sofas facing a fire, and even sit-down tables for having a meal. Smart or casual is fine.

The Boat "Abra"

by fareleira

At the Creek you find this boats that are called abra, this way of transport across the Creek is been used since the first days and today it means work for people and a must see activity for the tourists.
You can ride this boats to cross the Creek it's cheap and you can rent a boat for yourselv and ride all the way up and down the Creek and see the new blocks on the east side and old city part at west.
It shakes a bit, vibration from the engine!!
