Hiya,
has anybody stayed at the Oriental Palace hotel (Fish Round About - opposite Claridge Hotel - Omar Bin Al Khattab Road, Deira)?
we are two girls looking for reasonably priced hotel for three nights in February.
close to the beach and city centre, safe, nice and clean...
many thanks!!!
hiya...haven't stayed there but the reviews I have read on this place suggest that it's not bad at all. The location is very central....you are close to City Center and some of the best walking streets in Dubai. You are also within walking distance of the Gold Souk, the abra stations (boat stations) to get across the other side of the creek, some great restaurants and some good market style shopping. On the down side.....there is a lot of construction for the new subway right next door to the roundabout. The noise wouldn't be an issue but the traffic is pretty horrendous. You are also quite a long way from the main beaches. If your priorities are going to the beach and shopping you might want to consider staying in the Bur Dubai or Jumeirah areas. If you want to walk at night, go to the souks (markets), and soak up the atmosphere of an arab country then you should stay in Deira. Be warned....it is very hard to get taxis to go to Deira now and sometimes you have to walk quite a way to be able to catch one. All that being said, I live in Deira (close to the fish roundabout) and really enjoy it. I think you would feel very safe there.
As PJ said, the city centre and the beaches aren't in the same area. The nearest beach would be around 15 kilometres or so from Deira.
I'd choose the city centre - Fish Roundabout area is good - and just hop on the Big Bus Tour to see the beaches, or take a taxi to them. (Wait until about 10am because the traffic going in that direction is hoorendous earlier).
The hotel should be a 2 or 3 star hotel and as advised the location is fine.
Other than Jumeia beach you can also use Mamzar Beach part which is about 8 Km away from the hotel.
Good luck.
Thanks you guys, very helpful!!!
Hiya. I believe you were also asking about car hire. If you are staying in the Deira area I would strongly recommend not hiring a car. There are not a lot of places to park and it will get mad around there at night when you are likely to be coming back from your sight seeing. At least if you are in a taxi and get stuck you can jump out and walk until you hit a clear patch. If you have any questions about getting around this area let me know and I will try to help. As I said before I live very close to here so I'd also be happy to meet for a coffee when you arrive and give you any info you need.
All the best
PJ
