Taxis in Dubai

by greekcypriot

Can somebody tell me if taxis are expensive in Dubai.
Is the airport far from the city centre? We arrive at 8pm and leave the next day at 12 noon.(July 1st) Should I book an airport hotel or choose one in the city centre? I want to take advantage of that day instead of staying the whole morning in the hotel, before out trip to Nairobi.
Or should I book an airport hotel and just enjoy my stay there till the moment we leave. Any suggestions?

The airport is only 7 kilometres from the city centre.
Taxis are cheap, metered, air-conditioned, well-regulated. There's an AED20 surcharge for airport taxis but even with that the fare into the city centre would only be about AED30.

As the airport is so close to the city centre it really doesn't matter for such a short stay whether you choose a city or an airport hotel. By the time you clear the airport it will be maybe 9pm, and you need to be back there by 10am next day for your flight out. It's not much time but at least you'll be able to spend a little time around the Creek and the souks to get a taste of the city.

To clarify a couple of points raised;

Whether you think taxis are expensive or cheap depends where you come from and what you're used to paying. (The exchange rate is Euro1 = AED5.) Flagfall is AED3 and the fare is AED1.60 per kilometre and there is a minimum charge of AED10. Taxis do not pay the road toll, so there is no charge for it to passengers.

The Metro does not allow large luggage, the maximum size is 81cm x 58cm x 30cm.

There are 36 country passports which get an automatic visa on arrival.

If you choose to stay in an 'airport hotel' it doesn't have to be actually in the airport, there are several just outside the airport (Le Meridien, Rotana etc).

Jay, as you probably know the rules change here all the time and usually without any information being given, they just do it. It was 33 passports but they added others to the list (without telling us).

Taxis were originally charged the road toll (a stupid idea of course) which they passed on to passengers, but that was changed not long ago to exempt taxis.

There's so much like that, totally confusing. Sensible people can't work out why the bureaucrats come up with such complicated and unworkable ideas.

A good example is the rule that visitors have to stay away for one month after their original visit. It was announced at the same time as there was a big push to attract cruise passengers to spend some time in Dubai when they cruise from the new terminal. But the new rule means if they land here to join their cruise ship, take the one week cruise around the area...they can't get off the ship when it re-berths back in Dubai!

Not thinking things through is a real problem. They regularly come up with rules that have to be changed or scrapped when they realise the ripple effects.

Either you are tourist or future Dubai residence, it’s always help to find information about Dubai from the media. There are a lot of hints and useful infos.

by uglyscot

A large suitcase- you're sure to buy.... Absorbent clothes are best- especially . cotton.
A shawl or cardigan may be needed in winter months
Take more clothes especially underwear than you think you'll need . The humidity means clothes take so long to dry, that you may end up having to wear damp undies! Most things can be purchased locally. re-medication see colin_ bramso's warning tip. You may end up buying the latest equipment. Everything is here. Swimming outfits, sunglasses, sandals and suntan lotion an absolute must

Modern, clean, efficient metro

by Durfun

This means of transport is a blessing for Dubai. The city is quite sprawling, particularly on it's north-south axis, and without such a mass transit facility, getting around was a real struggle, especially during peak hours.

The metro is very efficient. The red line starts from Rashiiya (east of the airport), then it connects both of the airport terminals, passes through Deira (north of Dubai Creek), next there are two underground interchanges on either side of the Creek (Union, and Khalid bin Al Waleed) for connections to the currently under construction green line.

The red line then heads south through Dubai Mall (Burj Khalifa), the financial district, Mall of the Emirates, Ibn Battuta, all the way to Jebel Ali.

Stations and carriages are air-conditioned. Ticket desk officials are very helpful, and there are many leaflets expalining how the network is set-up, time-tables, and zonal charging structure.

You buy Nol cards and add credit on it, swiping it every time you enter and exit a station.

There are separate carriages for Gold Class, Women, and then the regular Silver Class.

The station design is unique & quite cool. They are quite distinctive when viewed from outside, and can be identified against the heavily developed highway & buildings if you look carefully.

A large part of the metro runs parallel to the Shaikh Zayed highway bearing north to south.
