Ala'Mer Hotel and Restaurant: Cool
I only stayed one night here but could easily have stayed a week or more: for my money (USD 20 a night) this place was perfect. Spotlessly clean, pleasant rooms and air-conditioned to the max (this is most important in Aden) with the added benefit of a ceiling fan in the room. And the adjoining restaurant was pretty good as well.
One of the measures of cheaper hotels is the availability of hot water. By that measure this place fails with style. There wasn't even a hot tap. But even at six-thirty in the morning (the longtone loves photography in the dawn light) the cold water was a comfortable temperature for a shower.
This was about the third hotel we checked out: my guide rejected the others as being too expensive. Short of a swimming pool, I really don't think this place could be bettered.

Golden Tulip: Not that Good
The Golden Tulip is the most upmarket hotel Aden has to offer, and like the rest of the city it's not up to much. Run down, scruffy and with little to recommend it. Awful food.
In fact I seem to have blanked most of the details from my mind! If you are vsisitng Aden and are desperate the details are below.

Elephant Bay Beach Resort: Nice with kids
Nice big rooms with A/C split units and their own little terrace, right on the beach. Views towrads the sea are less than perfect due to a small dam that blocks the view (but supposedly makes the sea between the dam and the beach very safe).
The natural arch that looks like an elephant is not visible from the property.
Food is very mediocre.

Sheraton Gold Mohur: Aden's best
Not opulent, but nice standard. Best beach with beautiful view over the Gulf of Aden towards Litltle Aden. Food is served in a nice setting and ok quality-wise, but nothing to rave about.
More stylish than the somewhat gloomy Mercure or the out-dated Golden Tulip Aden Hotel.
Unique Quality: Offers great deals during Ramadan (when it's virtually empty). USD 85 for a two-bed room and breakfast is a locally obtained preferential rate.

Questions and Answers
Q: Is anyone going to Aden? "If you have time in Aden to visit my father's grave in the Airforce Cemetery I would be very grateful. His name is George Mills..."
A: "Unfortunately, I only have the information that I have given on here. It would be very kind if you were able to find his grave and check on it for me. With thanks."
