Socotra guide: Socotra's best accomodation
The best way to visit the island is by renting a 4x4 car with driver and guide. They will provide you all the equipment to stay in the protected areas and free camping in order to enjoy the beauty and the wild nature of the island. the services are really basic but you will really live the atmosphere of and the touch of Mother Earth..
Unique Quality: basic toilet, water. nothing else

Summerland Hotel: Outstanding
The Summerland Hotel has rebuilt again and turned from a rather basic house into a quite normal hotel.
Best improvement: No more shared bathrooms. Now every room has an en suite bathroom with shower (but still no warm water). Power supply round the clock, there's a refrigerator, direct dialing telephone, air condition, TV with satellite receiver (whoever needs this in a place like Socotra).
Rooms are excellent clean, the complete hotel grounds as well. They even wash the exterior walls two times a day.
The staff ist extremely friendly and helpfully, they always do their best to fulfil every request.
Please note that some rooms on the second floor are rather noisy because water tanks are fixed on the roof above them and the pumps are running nearly continuously. Check that out and maybe choose another room.
Single US$ 60
Double US$ 90
Suite US$ 130
Car with driver per day US$ 60
Guide per day US$ 20

Homhill Campground: Camping in Homhill
There is a simple campground in Homhill, organized by the local community.
For a very modest fee you can either rent or use your own tents, and they prepare breakfast and even an evening meal (goat) if you like. They even have a shower/toilet - though not spotlessly clean, I`d like to say. This camping ground is in a stunning location surrounded by dragon blood trees. From the camp ground, a 2 hour hike over rough terrain leads to the beach. You have to make use of a cheap local guide for the hike (only 1.000 Yemeni Rial).

Socotra Tourist Hotel in Hadibo: Not the Ritz, but it will do
We stayed our last night in Hadibo because it is close to the airport and the flights to Yemen mainland usually leave early. While the hotel is nothing special, the rooms are rather clean for Yemeni standards (the shower less so) and a Hadibo Hotel is probably the only place to get a shower on this island. They have a restaurant next to the hotel which is pretty good and serves decent breakfast.

Taj Socotra: Acceptable standard
Named after Yemen's oldest luxury hotel, the Taj Sheba in Sana'a, this of course is a far cry from what one might expect from a "Taj" hotel, but nevertheless of an acceptable standard. The rooms look basic, but have a/c, mini-fridge and satellite tv. Bathrooms are shared between every couple of rooms.
Unique Quality: There is a restaurant. Walking distance to the centre of Hadibo, which is not a very exciting excursion to make.

Summerland Hotel: Hadibo finest Hotel
The Summerland hotel in Hadibo is owned by the Summerland travel group and it is a very basic clean hotel with cold running water. The the hotel is on a dusty dirty street (like the rest of the town) and is cement block/rock place that has the architecture of a cardboard box in faded out blue and white. The place is not the Ritz for sure but has very good food and very friendly helpful staff. The do have satellite TV if you do not want to miss your game - but that is even surrelistic in this remote place. I think this is really what one would call a guest house more than a hotel it has nice large bedrooms with a clean but common bath.

The Summerland Hotel: Basically the only place to stay
The hotel just underwent a major renovation early in 2004, so it is now clean, comfortable and offers complete hotel services. It has Sat TV, phones, internet access, laundry services and the only real restaurant on the island which is called The Ritz! They offer fresh seafood dishes such as Grouper, Tuna, Wahoo, Kingfish, Lobster and Shrimp. Of course, they also offer chicken, beef and pasta dishes as well as a few local dishes like goat.
Unique Quality: It is unique in that it is really the only place that caters to tourists, and as such, you will find a hotel that operates and anticapates your needs much as any western hotel does.
