Rosedon Hotel: A terrific smaller hotel/guesthouse

by 850prc

OK, here's another place that I didn't stay. But, I was very impressed by both its location and by its feel. We were very happy in our little B&B, but if I wanted to stay in a bigger hotel near Hamilton, I think I'd look into the Rosedon.

Oh one thing... although it has B&B qualities, the Rosedon is technically NOT a B&B. By Bermuda hotel authority definition, any accommodations establishment that has more than four rooms is a hotel, not a bed and breakfast or rooming house. This definition stands even though the Rosedon DOES include breakfast in their rates. Just in case you wanted to know.

Historic building, originally constructed in 1906. They serve afternoon tea, and the room in the main/grand house are the most desirable. I'm told that the rooms in the more modern two story wings are find, but not nearly as historic. Nice Victorian furnishings throughout, and a nice cozy main living room.

There is a pool and gardens behind the house.

The Fairmont Princess Hotel - Hamilton: The Grand Dame of Hamilton

by 850prc

OK two things..

First, I didn't stay at the Princess. I passed it everyday, and I know people who are familiar with the property. I know it's a good luxury choice near Hamilton

Second, it's really not the Grand Dame of HAMILTON. Technically, there ARE no hotels or guesthouses inside Hamilton. The Princess is in Pembroke Parish, on Pitts Bay Road. Pitts Bay is what Front Street, Hamilton, turns into at the city limit sign. The Princess is technically about 200 meters away from the city of Hamilton. But, we're talking small distances. You can literally SEE the center of Hamilton from the Princess.

The Princess is everything you'd expect a historic luxury property to be. It's been in this location for about 45 years... my parents tell me that a hotel called "The Bermudiana" used to be here, it burned down in the late 1950s. And even though it's four decades old, it's undergone numerous renovations, and is absolutely up-to-date in comfort and service.

If you want to stay in a large, luxury hotel in Hamilton...ok near Hamilton...The Fairmont Princess would be a time-tested good choice.

The Princess has a sister hotel over on the south shore of Bermuda, the Fairmont Southampton. Since the Princess (being on the harbor) has no beach, guests AT the Princess are entitled to free shuttle service over to the Southampton and its "private beach". Private beach is somewhat of a misnomer in Bermuda, as techically, nobody can own "the Queen's Bottom". But, hotels claiming certain beaches CAN own the beach chairs, lifeguards and such.

Clairfont Apartments: Cheap accomodations close to the beaches

by dlandt

The Clairfont Apartments were a five minute walk to the beach, close to a bus line and not too far from Hamilton or the light house. Clean and comfortable with a kitchen typical for this kind of accomodation, we had a very pleasant stay at an affordable rate. $100 per night may not sound like budget accomodations to an American, but compared ot what most rooms on Bermuda go for, it's a steal. The room we had could have slept up to six, and they provided a crib and high chair with no fuss or charge. Even with only eight apartments, there was a well maintained pool, and the hostess proved EXTREMELY knowledgeable and helpful. She made it a point to be clear she was available 24 hours per day. The only problem is that there wasn't a grocery nearby, meaning you had to plan.

They also do weddings and can provide some food service in the event of late night arrivals. the best part about the room was its location, five minutes walk to Warwick Long Bay Beach, a few more to Jobson's Cove, and less than that to the bus stop. There is a Swizzle Inn five minutes by bus or fifteen minutes walk.

Luxurious!: Fairmont Southhampton

by DG4ever

I was fortunate to go on a convention here. So very nice and the food here is great. (We attended many catered events here.) Although I didn't like that you have to take a bus to the beach. You can walk down also. But on the other hand, they have many walking trails around (as you walk down to the harbor you will see a trail they made from an old railroad) so make sure you pick up a trail map. They also have a bus down to the ferry that crosses to the Fairmont Hamilton Princess and city shops. I would not want to stay at the Hamilton Princess because of no beach access. I would guess they have a bus to the beach as well.
I have included photos of the beach areas by the Southhampton. I really liked that there were trails everywhere on the huge beach next to the Fairmont's beach. So impressed by the classy Bermudians; very friendly.

Decor was lovely and good shops. GREAT food.
You can order food & drinks at the beach area-they have a lot of great selections & was reasonable.

Barnesdale Cottages and Clearview Cottages: Efficiency Cottages

by airkarat

Many visitors to Bermuda stay at all-inclusive resorts and hotel chains. On the two occasions that I've visited, I've stayed at 3-star 'cottages' which are efficiency apartments (with a kitchenette).

The most recent stay was at Clearview Suites and Cottages on the north shore of Hamilton parish. It has received mixed reviews on Tripadvisor, but our experience was that it was clean, with the sheets turned over daily. The property had a clubhouse and pool and the hosts were very friendly. We dined at their Landfall Restaurant and found the food to be of high quality (not gourmet, but very tasty and traditionally Bermudian), and the portions were very generous. The ocean views (sunsets especially) were mesmerizing - we'd often eat breakfast on our balcony, and take sunset walks on the Railway trail that ran along the shore.

The Barnesdale Cottages were in Paget parish and I stayed there in 1998 - they were toward the middle of the island, with no ocean view. The apartment was clean and well attended.

I've seen reviews of these, and other budget-priced accomodations that describe a musty smell and attribute this to being 'dirty'. Bermuda has a high humidity level, and when not in use, these units my not always be air conditioned (dehumidified). I've noticed this smell, but have never seen mold. I'm hearing that even the fancy hotels can sometimes have a slight musty smell.

I'd imagine that efficiency apartments are an affordable way for families to enjoy the islands and to be introduced to genuine Bermudian hospitality.

Grotto Bay Beach resort: Close to Airport

Our stay was enjoyable. Good service. Nice people

Very close to airport, only $6.00 for taxi fee, you can even see the hotel from the airport. Beautiful beach. Caves. Fresh heated Pool.

Grotto Bay Beach Resort: Less expensive resort in Bermuda

by BillOnt

We like to stay in one of the lodges 'up top' with a great view.
There are also lots of lodges close to the water if you wish to be close to the ocean.
Although Grotto Bay is not directly on the open ocean the advantage is the beach is more protected when the weather is windy.

We like to buy the meal plan and eat right at Grotto bay for Breakfast and Supper.
Breakfast is a great feast with lots of selection from fruits and cold food to hot foods like hash browns, sausage, eggs and bacon. A great way to start the day.

Evening meals are much improved from previous visits. A good menu selection attractively presented of good food. All served in a quiet unhurried atmosphere.

Grotto Bay has several grotto's on the grounds like the one in the picture with the swimming pool in the background. It also has a couple of underground caves, one you able to swim in all for no additional charge.
The grounds are nicely groomed and leave lots of room for walking around and enjoying the flowers.
Children would feel welcome at this facility and there is a program for those children that are interested.
We use the public bus system for getting around and just outside the front gate is the bus stop which allows you to catch whichever of the 4 routes passing by that is most convenient for you.

Elbow Beach: A quiet resort

by easterntrekker

This resort is on a hill directly above Elbow Beach. (Only a few steps climb) It looked quite beautiful . All yellow and white . Small cottages around a huge expanse of grounds . Very friendly staff . We had lunch at their restaurant at the beach ( Mikey D's) WE didn't stay at the hotel.....too many $$$$$$$ for us. ( over $500 per night). The beach is quite lovely...very pristine and quiet.

Set above beautiful Elbow Beach

Royal Palms: A home away from Home

by easterntrekker

I would recommend this little hotel to anyone and if I ever go back to Bermuda I would stay here again.

The staff go out of their way to be of assistence. Set in lush gardens it's a convenient short walk to downtown Hamilton for shopping ,restaurants the ferry and buses.

Our room was really pleasant with lots of windows , and even though it was a hundred year old property ...good AC.

The only drawback is there is no snack bar on site and the restuarant is very beautiful but expensive .....not always what you're looking for. It's a tiny drawback though since you can easily walk or fro $6.oo get a cab to downtown.

A nice substantial contenental breakfast is included!!
