Old Club Med building and St. George golf course by grandmaR A Club Med was built here, but it was never really 'operated as a club' according to the local guy at Ft. St. Catherine. Apparently Bermudians did not appreciate and would not allow the kind of normal behavior that Club Med is famous (or infamous) for. It is a really prominent building when you come to Bermuda by cruise ship, and really stands out. I also understand that some investors are planning to turn this place into condos. Don't hold your breath. Theme: Hotel

1963 - St. George (hotel on hill)from Kindley AFB by grandmaR In 1963, I wanted a hotel that was close to the airport and also close to where my husband's ship was anchored. So I picked the St. George's Hotel which was out by Ft. St. Catherine up on the hill outside of St. Geroges. This was not a luxury hotel - IIRC it had iron bedsteads (twin) and a sink in the room. I have a picture of Bob in the hotel room, but it is too underexposed (no automatic exposure cameras then, and my camera didn't have a flash plus the film was only about ASA 25) to digitize.
There were great views over the town, and it was quite close to Ft. St. Catherine and so very convenient to get there. It was however, a couple of miles from town. Albert Gleizes (1881-1953) was a French cubist painter who spent the winter of 1917 at the former St. George's Hotel (where we stayed) in the Town of St. George, Bermuda. There he completed a number of Bermuda paintings including his "Portrait of Juliette" and "Paysage des Bermudes". Also, his view of Government House in Pembroke Parish is very interesting. I have a 1961 travel book which says: "St. George Hotel...On Rose Hill overlooking town. Has special Family Plan and children's playground. Indoor salt water swimming pool, golf course, beach facilities, dancing. Accommodates 200. Rates $11 to $16 MAP" In the 70s (according to locals) there were 5 different fires that started at the same time one night, and the hotel burned down. The current St. George's Club condo set-up is now at this location.
