There are bed and breakfast places in Charlottetown and in most of Prince Edward Island. Basically, you get a bedroom in a private home, and the owner provides your breakfast in the morning. These are nice places, and you might get to meet other people staying at the same place. Somewhat like a youth hostel, but all ages are welcome and it's usually better quality.
It wasn't particularly unique; it was just well-kept, well-run, and centrally located. Breakfast was quite good and there's a large eating area in which to socialize with other guests during mealtimes.
$16 (Canadian) for hostelling international members. Female dorms had 4 to 6 beds. Washrooms down the hall.
Okay hostel located in a former barn. It is located about 3 kms from downtown without public transport and is closed from 10am to 4pm every day.
