Royal Canadian

Stayed 3 nights at the Royal Canadian Lodge in Aug '05. Accommodations were fine, very spacious room, clean, nice bathroom, comfortable King bed. Decor was somewhat traditional with darker, staid furniture. From the online pictures, we expected the Lobby area to be more stunning with a large dominant fireplace but it was somewhat less than we anticipated. Everyone was very cordial and helpful. Location was great, only 10-12 min walk into town. I would rate this a good 3-1/2 *.
Expensive but Worth it in Comparison

June 2005 - We were on our honeymoon (from Florida) and had reservations at the Charlton's Cedar Court hotel. We checked in and immediately checked out. The room was nothing like the pictures on the internet. They offered for us to stay in their "sister" hotel, the Royal Canadian Lodge. We were a little hesitant but it was great from the start. There was valet and bell hop service, an elegant restaurant and a wonderful spa. Our room was spacious with a fireplace. The bathroom was very clean with a seperate vanity area. We had to pay more but it was definitely worth it.
A disappointment

I think this place has been over-rated. It is some distance from the centre of town. The food is just so-so and the service in the restaurant, especially at breakfast was poor. Front desk staff were first class. If you decide to eat elsewhere it is some distance to other restaurants. This place is overpriced for what it offers.
Very nice!!

Very nice room. Entire facility was clean and well appointed. Front desk and bell staff were very helpful and pleasant. Facility is a little walk from downtown Banff but not too far. We did not use the restaurant. Prices looked a little stiff. Worth the money. We would go back.
Good hotel, very comfortable with good service

Whilst it may be a little out of town (10 minute walk) - so what! The rooms are very well appointed, the hotel spa and pool are excellent and the parking is very welcome. Staff couldn't be friendlier. Its easier to park in the hotel and walk into town. Its a beautiful place...enjoy the walk!
Super hotel

We were expecting a good hotel after reading reviews on TripAdvisor and were not disappointed. The standard (justifiably rated deluxe by the hotel)room was spacious, with a king-size bed and corner fireplace. The bathroom was huge and superb. The fittings were absolutely beautiful, so stylish. Food and service in the dining room were excellent, not inexpensive, but worth it. This was the last of 12 hotels we stayed in on a drive through British Columbia and Alberta and our holiday ended on a high. The last time we were in Banff we stayed at the Banff Springs, but the service and amenities in the Royal Canadian, for us at least, were better. Throughly recommended.
Not quite four stars

Hotel was clean and rooms nice, however the night staff was sparse, and the housekeeping left alot to be desired. The front desk and valet service were nice and what you should expect for the price.
Don't expect huge variety in the meal catagory, the restaraunt is very pricy and again about what you should expect for the price. (I would stay at the Fairmont again for a true 4 star experience).
The pool is too small, and gets crowded too quickly, with kids screaming and no one to reign them in, its not the most romantic spot.
horrible, worst hotel, bad food

Good Hotel in Banff

Having just read the previous review I feel compelled to spring to this hotels defence. We stayed there in January and had a great stay . The junior suite room was comfortable and well presented. The staff were polite and helpful. The restaurant itself had an excellent dinner menu and we were generally impressed by the quality of the food with the exception of breakfast which was a little dissapointing. It is about a 10 minute walk to the centre of town.
Dissapointing

Having stayed at this hotel every year for the last few years I was very disappointed - there was a complete lack of atmosphere in the hotel - on the first night when we did venture into the bar we were told in no uncertain terms that it was closing just after 10:30 -which seemed poor for an allegedly 3.5* hotel!
This was symptomatic of the stay, with the exception of the guys on the bell desk the staff should be ashamed to call themselves part of the service industry - we were treated with indifference by the waiting staff and the reception.
The rooms themselves are very pleasant and the amenities acceptable, but I was constantly left with the impression that this hotel did not really want to have any guests!
All in all a real disappointment, and but for a couple of days in Kicking Horse and a night at the Buffalo Lodge in Banff I think this would have put me off ever going back to the area!
