Great Location for the shops

Wehad a lovely 3 night stay in this Hotel. Lots of history about the hotel in the hotel, about the great fire. Fits into the town very well with the building style. The room is plesant and the beds are comfy. Usual items in the room, the bathroom was adequate, but the door didnt seem to want to shut properly, and no lock on the door, which wasnt a problem for us, but might be for others.

We had probably the room with the best view, right on a corner room to look both ways down Banff Avenue and views of the Mountains. Was really beautiful to open the windows to them views again.

The Hotel its self was above average, only one lift which might be a problem in busy times. Yes, i would stay here again, unless i win the lottery and can afford to stay at the bannf Springs Fairmount hotel.

Unique Quality: FREE PARKING..... yes i was shocked, that does not happen often!

Mount Royal ,a beautiful Heritage Hotel

This Heritage Hotel has a lot of history , it opened for business in the spring of 1908. The hotel was originally called the Banff Hotel, and started with 60 rooms and a spacious Dining room and a billiard room. The hotel was owned by Dave and Annie Mc Dougall of Morley Alberta.
In 1912 .Then Jim Brewster of the famous Brewster family took over the Hotel for $75.000 dollar ,and after many improvements and added 50 additional rooms and an elevator. After a fire burned down the old wing of the Hotel ,after that the Mount Royal has become a good Hotel and has become well known.

More about Mount Royal Hotel

Excelllent hotel

by TripAdvisor Member whistlestop2

This hotel is ideally situated in the centre of Banff, close to all the shops and restaurants, the room we had was beautifully furnished. All the staff were very friendly.
There is a bar and restaurant at the hotel, but because we were in the middle of town we always ate out.
There is an excellent Irish Bar which does really good reasonably priced food within a 10 minute walk.

TOP Hotel - Great location!!

by TripAdvisor Member Hairball28

My boyfriend and i stayed at this hotel because it was in the heart of downtown Banff. The hotel is seconds from shops and restaurants. All within a very short range of one another.
We stayed in a double room on the 3rd floor and the room was spacious and had 2 double beds. We used one one of the beds to just put our clothes on in addition to the wardrobe we had.
There is an iron in the room and we requested a kettle which was delivered to the room.
Their is internet access for free in the room but you would need to bring your own ethernet cable.

We stayed on a room only basis and eat breakfast twice and lunch once in the Tony Romas restaurant which is located in the hotel. The food was nice and reasonabley price

The staff are friendly and we tipped the maid during the middle of our stay $10c.

The ski bus comes to the back of the hotel in the parking area. This is ideal as saves you having to walk far in ski boots and carrying your skis.

Their is a nice sushi restaurant to the side of the hotel and is very nice and reasonabley priced.
There is also a chinese restaurant called Silver Dragon which was just as good amongst another Japanese restauarant also in the same building. These are both on Banff Avenue. Come out the hotel, turn right and cross over. You will see the shops - cant be missed.

Their is also a restaurant called the Keg, this is on the left when you come out the hotel, just cross over and you will see the sign hanging up in a small arcade. Little pricey but food is great. Serves steaks with lobster and mash is to die for!!

A great Korean restaurant in Sundance Mall, this is past the Chinese restaurant.
Further up from there, there is a shopping mall and Gap, Lush and other shops are in there. In the mall at the bottom, there is also a japanese noodle place, real cheap and real nice. the cook the food infront of you. Dont try the chinese next to it, we saw them wiping old food back into the containers which hold the food they sell. Like a buffet typ thing.

Sunshine ski area is about 25 mins on ski bus and is a great place to be.

We liked it so much, we are going to go back next year!

The bed is also real comfy - perfect mattress if there ever was one.

Remember tipping is 15% and also you need to add the GST on to everything you near enough see priced.

Enjoy!!

Great Location and helpful staff but bit noisy

by TripAdvisor Member murrayuk

The hotel was in a great location with a good bus service to the slops. We went for 6 days for the ski-ing. Great ski-ing at Sunshine village and Lake Louise.

The room was good size and the staff really helpful The lounge bar good food and service and they let children in. Breakfast not very good so try Melissa's. The rooms were very noisy at the weekend and you could hear all the noise in the corridor. Which was a great shame and the only problem with the hotel.
The hot tub is very hot but good fun. For spa treatments try the mountain spa on the main street, great massage!

Noisy but excellent value

by TripAdvisor Member narcosis99

Booked for a great price through Expedia and was pleasantly surprised. It's a bit noisy in the back due to all the tour buses but the beds are very comfy and the rooms are a good size. Excellent value and great location, close to everything (incl Cow's Ice Cream).

Nice hotel and bar, not so great restaurant

by TripAdvisor Member CrunchieBite

We stayed here for three nights (2nd to 4th May 2007) with a room on the 3rd floor. The room was reasonably sized and comfortable with a pair of large beds and a adjoining bathroom. I personally found the bathroom to be quite dark and cramped but, its not like you go on vacation to stay in the bathroom so, it wasn't that big an issue. The room was kept clean throughout our stay and the staff I spoke to were extremely friendly and helpful and helpful. A special mention goes out to the bar staff in the bar next to reception (Tony Roma's Lounge) who I found to be extreme competent, helpful and nice to chat to.

We ate in the hotel restaurant (Tony Roma's ) on the first night and for breakfast the following morning after which we stayed well clear. I don't want to be picky but, on the first night, we ordered 2 steaks - one well done and one medium. After a 45 minute wait, the steaks were served...the medium steak was cooked perfectly however, the "well done" steak was dripping with blood and bright pink all the way through.

The next morning, we decided to give Tony Roma's a 2nd chance and regretted it. The restaurant was packed - there was no table service and the buffet area was virtually empty of food. Oddly, there was only 1 domestic style toaster for use by everyone in the restaurant to make their own toast...needless to say, there was an enormous queue and a lot of annoyed customers.

My advice - the hotel is fine and in a great location right on the main street of Banff but, don't eat in Tony Roma's. I would recommend trying Mellissa which is just round the corner and where the food is amazing and the service faultless!

Loved it

by TripAdvisor Member loopyloo67

We arrived here having read some very mixed reviews about the hotel itself and Banff as a resort. We loved it. There were roadworks along the road directly under our window but it didn't spoil our stay. We did upgrade our room and i'm glad we did as it was the minimum standard I would have been happy with, an executive room. Looked over the road so you could watch everything go by and a great mountain view. Only stayed 2 nights and would not wanted to have been here much longer as the hotel itself had limited amenities. But, it was clean and the restaurant was good.

Very convenient and comfortable

by TripAdvisor Member Johnjo42

We stayed 3 nights as part of a tour group. Banff is a superb town and the Mount Royal is right in the centre. It was very comfortable and you can walk anywhere in the town in a few minutes. There's a comfortable lounge and the staff at reception are very friendly and knowledgable.

As others have said the Tony Romas restaurant is awful and we never ate in it. We tried to have breakfast there but the staff were so unhelpful and in one case downright rude that we didn't bother. (This is very unusual for Canada).
There are plenty of cafe's for breakfast.

They are completely relaying the main street where the hotel stands and its a bit dusty but it will be well worth it in the end.

Steaks in Canada are the best I've ever eaten and the Keg Restaurant across the street and down towards the bridge was excellent. The Greek restaurant on the same side of the road as the hotel towards the bridge is also excellent.

There are superb walks along the river and if you get a chance go to the Icefield on the way to Jasper. The sulpher mountain is another great trip. Take a bus or go as part of a trip.

Average, but great central location

by TripAdvisor Member grumpy-tourist

Stayed here for 2 nights in June as part of a large tour group.
Room was furthest away from reception (part of the old Cascade Hotel which was swallowed up by the Mount Royal) and was smaller than others in the hotel. Tea/Coffee maker, but coffee was poor. Breakfast was buffet style, but expensive for what was available. Lukewarm tea sent back twice, and no interest from serving staff (when they could be found) and more poor coffee.
The hotel is located in the very heart of Banff and is an ideal base for exploring. Local buses to Sulphur Mouintain Gondola and the Banff Springs Hotel are one minutes walk.
Plus points....in the centre of everything, with good restaurants and local bars all around (Melissa's, Wild Bills, Tommy's Pub and many others)

Minus points....avoid the breakfast.....especially the coffee!
