Don't bother spending the extra money staying at Banff Springs. The Rimrock hotel is a wonderful place to stay. It is up in the mountains where peace and quiet in addition to the scenery are to die for. It is worth a buck or two. Great hotel!!! While you are there take a short hike up the road to take a gondola ride. If you don't want to pay the money, just hike up the mountain. It takes about 30-60 minutes to hike. The scenery is great and you can take the gondola down for free.
If you want to save a buck or two, my husband and I stayed at a bed and breakfast that was located about 15 minutes outside of Banff. The place is called Eagle's Nest located in Canmore. Elizabeth is the host. She is great. She makes fantastic banana pancakes! You won't go wrong staying with her. The room we stayed in has a jacuzzi and a separate bathroom. It is a great place to stay!

Is you are visiting Banff go on the Condola Cable Car up to Sulpher Mountain. Owned by Brewsters.
Wonderful sight from the top as you can see over Banff with the mountains all around you.

From the Cave and Basin proceed back towards the Bow River bridge on Cave Ave. and proceed passed the bridge. Cave Ave. becomes Spray Ave. Turn right at the first light onto Mountain Boulevard and continue up Mountain passed the Rimrock Hotel. Turn left into the Sulphur Mountain Gondola parking lot. A fond memory of Banff and will miss seeing those mountain and lake views more than anything.
Elegant Hotel in Beautiful Setting

Everything about the Rimrock Hotel is first class. The lobby, staff, pool, restaurants and views were spectacular. They have a shuttle service that takes guests to and from town. When the shuttle wasn't was running, they covered the cost of taxi's. Excellent service. We were disappointed with the rooms. Although, they upgraded us to a room with a view, the room needed a remodel. For such a beautiful hotel, it is a shame that the room seemed dingy and old. However, that shouldn't deter anyone from staying there while visiting Banff.
Couldn't have been happier

I was so happy we chose the Rimrock Resort over the Fairmont Banff Springs. For one-third of the price, we had a beautiful, large room on the top floor with a balcony. The shuttle to and from town was fantastic, as was the lobby/lounge and the spa. The coffee bar off of the lobby was the perfect place for a quick and cheap pre-hike bite, and the range of restaurants was impressive. I highly recommend this hotel for someone who wants luxury at a more reasonable price.
Poor Service

The Rimrock Resort is lovely, well-appointed, and offers a good breakfast and nice views, but our experience there was terribly disappointing and annoying. This was our honeymoon and the staff at the check in desk took more than 30+ minutes to check us in, were ill-informed, too young, and would not upgrade us to a better room even though we informed them that it was our honeymoon; at $425 C. it would seem that they could have at least sent a bottle of champagne to our room but we were treated no better than at the local Motel 6. Also the bed was hard with springs pushing through and in desperate need of replacement. We even filed an in-house review form and never received a response. Try one of the other smaller hotels in town, where you will likely receive better treatment.
Very Disappointing Visit
by TripAdvisor Member Faithhawley
We stayed at the Rimrock for two nights Aug 20-22nd. We booked our stay after reading all of the recent positive reviews, so we were surprised and very disappointed with our experience. We had requested a non-smoking room with king bed and the best location for an expansive view. (We had booked a premium view room.) When we arrived, we were also greeted by a very inexperienced desk clerk who basically informed us that we were wrong to expect a king bed as most of their rooms are queen....a fact that I was never informed of at the time of booking or when I called back twice to confirm my reservation. She told us we were assigned a queen room but she didn't seem to know where our assigned room was located in terms of the view. We then spoke to the front desk manager who was cordial and offered to show us another option with a more expansive view. However, the "non-smoking" room we were shown reeked of smoke, which was entirely unacceptable since I have been undergoing serious medical treatments and cannot be around smoke. The front desk manager seemed unconcerned with trying to ensure that true non-smoking rooms are available for those who cannot tolerate smoke. He explained that in non-smoking rooms "people will smoke anyway". So we were stuck with the original room which was across from the busy elevators and which at first smelled fresh (must have been aired out) but within hours also showed signs of smoke permeating the room. The bathroom ceiling was actually sagging and discolored from extensive water damage from the room above..... very distasteful in a hotel of this caliber. When I mentioned this to the manager, he thanked me for telling him....but no apologies. Like the last reviewer, we had mentioned that this trip was a special occasion anniversary trip, but we never received so much as a congratulations, let alone champagne. Later in the week we spent three nights at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and from beginning to end we received the wonderful treatment that was sadly lacking at the Rimrock. My suggestion is to stay elsewhere.
Neat and cool.

We stayed in this awesome hotel 9-10-04 to 9-11-04 and we enjoyed it. The room was big and very well appointed. It's in a great location away from the hustle and bustle of town. We will stay there again if we are back in that part of the world. One thing though it is not the Banff Springs hotel so if you have this dreamy idea that it isyour wrong. For the price and the peace this is the one.
A memory you won't want to miss.

There is no question why this is the #1 hotel in Banff. The hotel excels in; location, design, food and staff. The vistas from the rooms are outstanding, and unparalleled in the Banff area, rooms are immaculately maintained, as is the entire facility. Although we only stayed in one room, we did glance out the other side of the building and were met with even more wonderful views to be had. The staff at the RimRock is AAA+, not only incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, but attentive and accommodating. This is a hotel which will spoil your expectations for any other place you might stay in the Banff/Glacier/Jasper area,, even Vancouver for that matter. The Eden restaurant is an experience which can only be adequately described by a sojourn there. A dining-evening event worth every minute. Thank you RimRock for making an indelible memory.
Beautiful Views, Rotten Service

This resort, at over $300 Canadian per night, isn't worth it. While the location and views are pretty, the service stinks. Staff is mostly young kids who have no experience with guests, and complaints go unanswered. We spent a couple of days on our honeymoon here and I would not do so again. We eve filled out one of those comment cards but no one from this resort ever called to discuss it with us.

Rimrock Resort
by Teensy
We are planning a trip to Banff early Mar 2006 and are staying at the Rimrock.
Does anyone have photos of rooms and/or view from their room? We are trying to decide which level of room to book as the only difference is the view. Anyone have an opinion on this? Thanks.

you'll have a nice room no matter what you pick, I don't what the rooms look like from personal experience but i have heard that it is an excellent hotel from friends and family, it's part way up the mountain so you should get some sort of view no matter what room you choose.
hope this helps
