Calgary Airport to Edmonton

by clmbsb

Hi.

We will be flying into Calgary but staying in Edmonton. I understand that there is no rail link between the 2 cities so how can we get there?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Clare

By bus from Calgary itself, perhaps?

1. Fly - there are air connections between the two cities, but beware that the Edmonton Airport is in Nisku, some 30 km (20 mi) south of the city. I have not used public transportation to get from the airport into the city (I've always rented a car), so cannot comment. I think the taxi fare

2. Take the bus. http://www.greyhound.ca/home/ Greyhound runs buses from the Calgary airport to Edmonton. See the link for schedule and prices.

3. Rent a car and drive.

There are no rail connections between the two cities.

Most people I know take the Red Arrow bus from Calgary.

If you take a commuter flight to Edmonton from Calgary, you have a few options to get to downtown. From Edmonton Airport (Nisku), you can take Sky Shuttle ~$15 (http://www.edmontonskyshuttle.com/), taxi ($45+) or rent a car.

Public bus service between Edmonton airport and Nisku, with continuing service to Edmonton downtown is in the works but has not been started just yet.

Thank you all for your replies.

We have solved the problem by deciding to fly direct to Edmonton via Gatwick. It will mean a bit of extra travelling in the UK but after a 9 hour flight the last thing i want to do is get on a coach for 2-3 hours then try and find our hotel (Days Inn Edmonton South)

Thanks

Clare

Travel Tips for Calgary

Snow Day

by penumbra

A couple of times a year, the snow comes down in Calgary but there isn’t any wind. The effect is that all of the trees and fences are coated with a glossy white coating. When the sun comes out the world is fresh and clean and peaceful. Perfect for pictures or some outdoor winter activity.

A highlight to being in...

by Kaglis

A highlight to being in Calgary is taking a two hour drive West to Lake Louise. Not only is there world-class skiing and beautiful hiking trails, but the site of the Chateau Lake Louise is unforgettable.

Picture an old regal hotel built in the early century looking out on a glacial aqua color lake with snowcapped mountains and a glacial field as a backdrop. It will take your breath away. When there, treat yourself to Sunday brunch in the Chateau, looking out at this scene. The best things about Calgary are the wide open spaces and feeling of peace.

I love travelling to other countries and experiencing other ways of life. But, there is nothing like coming back home to relish in the natural beauty and calmness of our surroundings. Calgary is not over-populated so there is always a feeling of space wherever you go (which as Canadians we are afforded by this huge country of ours). Life here is safe and seems so far away from the war, hate, pollution and other sad parts of life in other places.

A sign of sadness

by scottishvisitor

Imagine our shocked reaction while standing in the customs line to be told of the London bombings from an American tourist.
Government buildings in Canada lowered their flags - so did our hotel as a mark of respect.

"If you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes"

by Redlats

The weather in Calgary is quite different than Winnipeg. There is a saying -- "If you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes and it will change". This tendency to change means that you always dress in layers and bring a daypack so you can remove or add layers as it changes throughout the day.

In also means that Calgary has a much shorter growing season than Winnipeg as you can frosts in almost any month in Calgary. It also means that they have milder winters as Chinooks travelling over the mountains mean the possibility of above freezing temperatures in the middle of winter.

Walking, Running, Gliding, Riding

by penumbra

Calgary has ~580km of pathways and ~260 km of on-street bikeways. The most beautiful (and popular) routes are along the waterways (Bow river, Elbow river, Glenmore reservoir, Fish creek). In high traffic areas, there are separate side-by-side pathways for those on foot and those on wheels. The major routes are available year round as snow is cleared off 42 km of the pathway system during the winter months. You haven’t seen a dedicated cyclist until you’ve seen a small head lamp bouncing down an icy trail at 6am in the morning when the temperature is -25C. A map of the bicycle routes & pathways is available here.
