Calgary Accomodation (RTW trip)

by 1UCY

Our first stop on a round the world trip is Calgary.. Backpacking none-the-less on a budget of £30 per day ($60). Looking for suitable budget accomodation (hostels/motels/B&B) that is clean, friendly and good loaction. Any suggestions? Ideally not the club 18-30's atmosphere, as we are ages 25 and 28 (couple)..

Any must-see sights, unmissable attractions?

Is that £30 each or together?

You shoul have no problem finfin accomodation if booked in advance. I don;t know any hostels but there are a few. Check the tips on VT for Calgary.
Things to see in the area are Drumheller, Banff, Columbia Ice Fields, Lake Louise and others

I have heard that the hostel in Calgary is in a questionable part of town but I have never been there. I too am looking for an inexpensive motel to stay in the night before I fly back home in July.

Travel Tips for Calgary

Princes Island is alway busy...

by ninayuill

Princes Island is alway busy with a festival of one kind or another. Eau Claire Market is fun to shop and have a snack or coffee and enjoy people watching. My granddaughter SAMANTHA was born here, that is my fondest memory.

Plus 15 System

by madamx

Sounds like hair care products or vitamins, right? Actually the Plus 15 System is 16 km system of enclosed walkways around downtown Calgary, roughly about 15 feet off the ground, the first one being built in 1970. There are higher levels, subsequently called Plus 30 and Plus 45.

They are extremely useful, as in the dead of winter, you can stay nice and cozy walking to your destination. My favorite one is attached to the Civic Parkade on 9th Ave. SW and 5th St. SW. The walkway will take you through Penny Lane Mall (upscale shopping) into Eaton Centre and TD square (see shopping tips). So convenient as in the winter you can leave your stuff in the car and your hands are free while you shop.

John past on some important information

by scottishvisitor

This nice chap approached us while we were looking at some statues. He told us he was the Prime Minister and gave us his papers.
We had a good laugh together while he tried to sort out the world.
Hope he gets reinstated because he promised us a free holiday.

Free Tennis

by madamx

If you like tennis, there's no reason to miss a game in Calgary. There are approx 160 free tennis courts located all over the city, and it's first come, first served. As a courtesy, if there's others waiting, people limit their game to 30 minutes. However, if the court is busy, there's usually more tennis courts in the area if you look.

Music at Noon

by BLewJay

If you want to hear some excellent music and have time to spear, head on down to the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer. Located in downtown Calgary, the Music at Noon concert is held every Wednesday at lunch time featuring some of Calgary's most talented musicians. On a recent trip to Calgary, our friend Ms. Roxanne Laycock Bingham performed compositions from W.A. Mozart to F. Chopin.
