car train to calgary?

by rippleterry

I live in the Milwaukee area and would like to take a train to Calgary and put my car on the train so that I can drive back. Does anyone know if that is possible?

Via Rail does not offer this service.

Via Rail, Canada's passenger train, does not service Calgary but, does get you to Edmonton, north of Calgary. You can ship your car to Edmonton with CN Rail. CP Rail services Calgary if you want to still ship the car there

There isn't any passenger train service coming out of Milwaukee going across the Canadian border that I know of. There are connections to Canada in the Montreal area, Niagra Falls area, and between Seattle and Vancouver. You'd have to drive to Winnipeg to get one of the trans-Canadian trains, or take the Empire Builder out of Milwaukee and rent a car at some suitable place in Montana and drive to Calgary from there. Unfortunately most stations in Montana have very little in the way of passenger services and finding something that has car rental will be very difficult.

Simply Marble-ous

If you’re downtown and make it to the Eau Claire Market or Prince’s Island, there is an art composition worth viewing. The An Auspicious Find is made up of four panels containing a total of ~15,000 glass marbles. The pictures on the panels are not overly sophisticated, but their reflected light is striking none-the-less. I felt compelled to touch the marbles, and amazingly, they can spin between the two sheets of metal that hold them upright.

Ride Passes for the Stampede

by Seradoms

For the whole month before the Stampede, you can get unlimited ride passes for the amusement park portion of the Stampede for much cheaper than it costs to buy per ride / day pass on the grounds. Checkout any local Safeway grocery stores for details.

Especially good deal for kids who never quit!

Sturdy and light gear with bags/luggage that can be locked. Light to medium at night, dependable shoes if you plan to walk around some of the points of interest. Not really needed to bring as you can purchase any items you might require locally. Camera of some sort and/or video. If you are planning on camping, firewood ect. can be purchased in most areas that allow open fires. Sunglasses and sunsceen should be a consideration. The weather in Calgary is very unpredictable, being that we are so close to the mountains. However the temperature ranges from about 25-32 degrees during the months of July-August. At night it may rain and may be a little cool(15-20) closer to the end of August, beginning of September.

Hockey Night in Calgary

by madamx

Calgary has two major hockey teams -- The Calgary Flames and The Calgary Hitmen. The Calgary Flames are in the National Hockey League, and were acquired from Atlanta, Georgia in 1994. The Hitmen are in the Western Hockey League, which is a junior league.

The games are held in The Pengrowth Saddledome-- The building is a landmark in Calgary, with it's distinctive design -- like a saddle.

My husband and I are more fans of The Calgary Hitmen, as decent Flames's tickets prices have become almost unaccessible -- also the action is better with the Hitmen as they are looking to get drafted to the NHL. A single Hitmen ticket is about $15.00, where a Flames ticket in the "nosebleed" section of the Saddledome is $32.00; good seats going for around $100.00. With the Hitmen tickets, you can basically sit anywhere you want. Attend a Hitmen game to get more bang for your buck.
