Ice Cream and Cattle

Cochrane Ranche was "the biggest operation in the Dominion" in 1881, and you can still visit this historic ranch today, as it is a designated heritage site. It is no longer a working ranch, but a small part of it remains, located on a pretty creek, and you are free to wander the area on interpretive paths and trails. An old cabin serves as an interpretive centre, and you learn why even though the ranch started as a huge, successful, operation that it failed.
Cochrane Ranche is located outside the town of Cochrane, destination for generations on a summer Sunday -- for ice cream. For 50 years, MacKay Ice Cream has been an institution in the town. Sure, there are much better commercial ice creams to be had out there, but it's all in the ritual. The process of getting to Cochrane was the fun of coasting down the big hill into the town. The hill is known as The Cochrane Hill, once called "Manachaban" by the Stoney Indians. There is a new subdivision being terraced there, but the views are still impressive of the prairie and mountains beyond, as you head down the hill.
While eating your ice cream, wander through the town. It's now known more as a bedroom community for Calgary, but it still has retained it's charm and western theme. There are some quaint shops here, and you can get good coffee at Cochrane Coffee Traders.
Directions: Cochrane is located about 20 minutes west of Calgary. Take Highway 1A west, and don't forget to gear down on "Manachaban". Cochrane Ranche is located just west of town, keep following Highway 1A, until you see the sign.
Greet people with a smile....

Greet people with a smile. Were Canadian, so were all pretty nice. Just let people know if your lost, they'll usually help. Tipping is usually the G.S.T. value on the bill X2. (14% of the bill). Bring a debit or interact card, you dont really need to carry much cash anywhere. Were a Euro-Asian city.
Yoga
by Maurgan
For all the yogis and yoginis coming to Calgary - Heaven's fitness has a great facility and lots of variation in classes, including Hatha, Ashtanga styled classes, as well as Pilates fusion. I'd recommend the Ashtanga classes with Rob Nicholls. There is also another studio several blocks down, named Yoga Passage, which is also suitbale for Power-Vinyasa styled classes. Both are located just south of downtown, about a 10 minute walk from the 7th Ave LRT.
Please see the Heaven's website for more information as well as photos. If you are looking for yoga gear, we have a Lululemon located on the SE corner of 17th Avenue and 4th Street SW.
If you'd prefer a more boutique sort of feel I love YuDu in Kensington 233,10 Street NW (easy access from downtown - get off at the Sunnyside stop). Lixin, one of the owners is awesome - lots of colors and cuts. The sizing is NOT generous and I don't think they carry over a 14. I love this shop, however unlike Lulu, Yudu does not have any hemstresses on staff to take care of the really long yoga pants.
Typical residential neighborhood
by ptitetoile
As I am/was staying at the Holiday Inn Airport on Mac Kinnon Drive, I walked around in the neighborhood..and I discovered a very nice typical residential place! Wooden house with a wooden fence and a car in front of it, alleys with trees all along...covered by white shining snow...very relaxing place!
