Visit Mario's, it's small, it's out of the way and you'll have to look for it, it's in a strange location, but has some of the best food on the planet. Being from New England, the 'cowboy' buzz of the Stampede as we cycled through town was pretty wild.

As you can see, at the smaller rodeos, you get about as close to the action as anyone would want to...!!! These are the Chuckwagon Races. They can be very dangerous both for the riders and the horses. But they definitely are exciting!
Don't forget - winter in Calgary is COLD!!

Very minimal theft from the Calgary international Airport - so dont worry about locks on luggage, unless you have something very valuable (in which case, consider taking it with you in your carry-on if it fits!) If you arrive in Calgary from mid-October to early-March pack good winter cloths - we get snow, ice, cold weather and LOTS of it! This includes things like a touque (warm hat), warm jacket, scarfs, gloves, and good boots. Of course, if you pack light - allof this is available here in shops everywhere! :_) All available in stores across the country.
The Calgary Stampede!

I have very found memories of the Calgary Stampede and for a great dose of western Canadian culture you should take it in.
There is more than the rodeo, but it is a huge event!!! It is usually in July each year. Follow the link I provided and you will see there is a lot of fun to be had.
I remember the intense summer heat!!!

Kananaskis Country!
Many people rush through the Calgary area on to Banff, not realizing that it is one of many outdoor destinations in Alberta.
The picture here is in Kananaskis Country on my last trip. We hiked up a path for about 2 and a half hours to reach a basin with four lakes in its bowl. I was also able to visit some 'ice caves' where we crawles up through fissures in the rock to emerge at higher and higher points on the face of a mountain.
Here is a web address for more detailed info on Kananaskis Country.

By the way, I by no means am saying Kananaskis is a better destination than Banff, but that people should try and take in as much as possible in this utopic region.
