Lunches Near the University

by Jetgirly

Can anyone suggest locations for lunch *near* the university? We usually use public transport to go out for lunch after class on Friday, and we're running out of ideas. Restaurants MUST have vegetarian options and should be accessible by either C-Train (from University station) or one of the following busses: 9, 72, 73, 20, 19, 119 in less than thirty minutes. We prefer locally owned restaurants rather than chains.

Try the Redwater Grille, it's walking distance from the university, across the street from Foothills Hospital. I don't know for sure if they have a veggie choice, but most higher end restaurants do these days.

You could also pick up the latest free copy of City Palate magazine, available at Planet Organic near Market Mall. Also do a search on Where.ca:

I could ask my siblings who live in that end of Calgary. I quite enjoyed the burgers we had at a Dairy Queen near McMahon (sp?) Stadium last time I was in Calgary, but I didn't ask if they had a veggie-burger.

We don't really eat fast food.

although this is closer to sait take the c train to sunnyside stn. In kensington there are many choices

On 10st at about 4 ave nw shawarma station (Lebanese) very very good!
for more of a dessert place, just off kensington rd. there is a crepe place called the blue danube in the basement beside the polish canadian club.
closer to the U, have you tried Saigon Y2K? right across from the stadium.

enjoy

Travel Tips for Calgary

The best place to go for...

by trip_rmn

The best place to go for nachos and beer has to be the Stadium Keg, located just across the Foothills Hospital on Uxbridge Drive and the corner of 16 Ave. N.W.. Asides from that, there is a nice patio and the interior design is nice. The chinook winds. In the winter there can be temperature differences of up to 30°C! Sometimes there are cold spells, where the temperature remains below -25°C for over a week! Then, when the warm air masses cross the Rocky Mountains the temperature rises to 0°C. It really feels like summer!

Calgary Tip

It was at ****** Falls (i will put in the correct name, have to look it up again, all i know the spelling is brutal, but a nice place, you take the Kicking Horse Pass from Field, B.C. to get there)Anyway, it was Canada Day, and there they were, they way i used to adore them when i was a little kid. 2 officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in their formal dress! When asked for pictures with them, the answer was: ' Thats what we are here for! Welcome to Canada!' That was really nice. Tho they were doing a tough job, they had pictures taken with thousands of people and teddys and...
I bet afterwards they wished they had chosen the highway patrol for that day instead of doing the PR-thing up there, considering ridiculous things the poor mounties had to pose with! Oh well...

OK, this may not be what everyone deems as culture, but in the broader sense... Yeah, I'm splitting hairs here, but this is the only way to get this on my front page. The point is, The Calgary Stampeders won the Grey Cup this year!!!! It was a great game and uh, well, so was the party!!!!!

Take in a Calgary Stampeder Game

It's interesting to see the difference between the Canadian game and the American Game...it takes some getting used to but when you break it down to it's basic form, it's still football. Bring the appropriate clothes, hat, sunblock and a camera.

Eclectic Experiences on this Block

by Maurgan

17th Avenue S is a great place to shop, hang out, go for drinks, try a fantastic restaurant and do just about anything in an unique and eclectic environment.

Shops range from the positively decedant - as found in Mount Royal (roughly 8th St and 17th Ave) - to ruggedly urban in the many second hand shops. There is also the environmentally sound Hemporium, where you can find just about anything that could, and has been, made out of hemp.

Parking in this area can be tricky, so you are best taking transit, and walking 10 blocks south from the downtown C-Train stops, or walk west from Victoria Park Station.
