television coverage

by moet32

Hi

I am coming to Alberta in May,

I am hiring an rv to travel around in.

I want to purchase a portable television to use in the Rv.

Can someone tell me what the reception is like in that area and what frequencies the channels are broadcast on ( is the systen PAL or different..

Will I be able to pick up the channels on a portable system.

Many thanks

steve

Quite a few campgrounds offer cable tv hookups now. Most have wireless internet as well.
If it's basic tv using an aerial you want, you'll be disappointed. With the growth of cable and High Definition there is not a lot of demand for this type of transmission anymore so it has become the domain of the Canadian broadcasting Corporation (English & French channels) and CTV (private national).
Just pick up a small portable when you arrive as a PAL set will not work on NTSC, you can probably get one here for $50 then you can just give it away when you are done with it.
The other thing is that if you are going to Alberta you will spend a lot of time in the mountains and tv reception is very poor there.

Your RV rental company probably has tv's for rent, probably no more money than buying and you don't have to wonder what to do with it after your holiday. It will also save you the hassle of driving around in your RV, to find a place that will sell you a TV.

And, as stated, you can pretty much forget about picking up any channels on an antenna, unless you are right in Calgary or Edmonton. You will need cable hook up or a satellite to get any reception outside of the major centres. We live 40 miles south of Calgary and can't get any TV reception in our house with an antenna.

Travel Tips for Calgary

North West End

by Simonneeddy

Visit all the city.We lived in the North west end and enjoyed shopping in the big shopping centre there. Also we were close to the main highway leading to Banff etc. This is a picture of the Skyline of Calgary from where we stayed. We miss the dry climate and the mild winters

Chinooks

by madamx

Just when you think winter will never end, all of the sudden, a weather front will move into Calgary called a Chinook.

A chinook is basically a warm, westerly wind coming over the mountains from the Pacific. When the moisture-rich pacific air hits the subarctic cold air over an area, such as Calgary, the moisture in the Pacific air condenses, and forms a distinctive arch in the sky called a Chinook Arch.

The temperature can rise as much as 20 degrees overnight, and we get double digit temperatures in the middle of winter. I've seen the temperatures get as high as 14 or 15C one New Year's. Chinooks just seem to lift people's spirits -- you'll see a lot more smiles on people's faces. Also, always carry extra windshield washer fluid in the car -- all that melting snow turns cars into mud balls. Some Calgarians even take to wearing shorts!!

Just because Calgary is in a ranching province and hosts the stampede rodeo every year don't assume that we're all cowboys! In Calgary city folk are most definitly city folk so don't be surprised if we aren't all wearing cowboy hats!

P.S. We can always tell who is a tourist in Calgary by the way they pronounce our city name. Everyone new to Calgary pronounces it 'CAL-GAAR-Y'. Everyone who lives here pronounces it 'CAL-GRY' as in we drop the sound of the A. :)

Is jumping up and down in your seat a sport?

A Calgary Stampeders Football game is always fun. Especially when they win! But since this is Canada, may I suggest you come to an early season game or be sure to bring your woarm woolies as the season draws closer to the Grey cup (November). this year our beloved Stamps didn't do so well, but hey -- last year they won the Grey Cup so we can't be greedy now can we? A loud voice for cheering, a cushion to sit on... that's about it....

Cardston

by theagent

If you're heading south, rocket past the sprawl and head to the small town of Cardston. The Mormon Temple there is visible from all over town and is enormous.

While not being allowed inside because I would sully the place with my infidelity, I did manage to take a picture of me outside.

Also, swing by the Fay Wray fountain dedicated to that lovely Cardston gal Fay Wray (King Kong's love).
