Flight Ideas

by orlandoglobetrotter

I'm trying to organize a trip with a group of about 10 from Florida to Calgary to see the Stampede. We have a few different flight options but most seem to center around flying direct or some sort of stop in either Toronto or Minneapolis or Detroit. There doesn't seem to be many low price options which is what I'm looking for. We don't mind driving a limited amount so if anyone had any suggestions about flying to Edmonton instead of Calgary and then driving in or flying to somewhere in the northern U.S. near the border and driving up, that would work too. I've tried to look for cheap no-frills (non-executive) charters too. We're just hitting a lot of dead ends. Anyone got ideas???

First, make sure everyone has their Passport. NorthWest has a $94 each way fare from Orlando to Calgary. There is space on July 1-7 Jul. Other options would be Billings Montana at $285 R/T.

I can't find this Northwest deal you're talking about. Where are you looking?

In a airline computer. If you enter 10 as the number of travellers you will get a different answer ans airline computers have a 9 limit. Try looking at 9 people

Hi!

Hope you got the flights you were looking for.

Another option is Fare Compare. Sign up for alerts for certain city pairs and you'll receive emails when there is a sale. I prefer the info coming to me vs. constantly searching.

The owner of the site recommends only searching for 1 person when you are first looking. He has an article that explains why. I think that might work best when you are planning early and can assume 8 other seats are likely available.

The website advises of seat prices several hours before they are available.

United had seat sales to Canada in the last couple of weeks. Not sure if those are still available.

I have been in Calgary several times during the stampede but have only attended once. If you do not already have rooms, that's something to look into. I've had to stay in Canmore and Banff before and I booked quite early on. Friends own a B & B - they are booked 1 year out for Stampede.

Have a great time!

I would suggest, if you don't already have rooms in place, that you see if any are still available before you book your flights. The rooms do fill up fast for Stampede week.

as mentioned above, have your accommodations in place before you book your flight.
if it's significantly cheaper flying into edmonton, the edmonton airport is outside of the city on the way to calgary. it's a fast good highway and you can be to calgary city limits within 3 hours. usually though, flying into calgary from the states is cheaper then flying into edmonton.

Travel Tips for Calgary

When in doubt, head downtown

by dinhyen

We were unsure where to begin, so we drove around till we decided to stop at a tourist information center at Eau Claire Market. We never did find it, but it turned out Eau Claire was not a bad place to start. It's similar to an American mall, with typical shops, restaurants, food stalls, an IMAX theater, outdoor swimming pools, the usual assortment of characters. It's a good place to relax and recharge the empty stomach that you endure on the long drive here, a problem compounded by the traffic snarls around downtown. It's only a few blocks walk to downtown. Practically next door is the Chinese Cultural Center.

OPEN COUNTRY

by Simonneeddy

See the open country at the North West End of the city. In this picture taken from the rear veranda of my daughter's house we could see horses in the field which was still a part of a ranch. This was on our second visit. Today it probably all built up with houses and streets

Cedar Waxwings when it is -25 C.

by dabidc

Quite suddenly several hundred Cedar Waxwings flew around the houses and stopped on several trees, before just as quickly they flew off somewhere else.

Yes I know there are not several hundred birds in the photo, but there are several trees for them to rest in.

Packing List

by Tri

Bring clothes for biking and hiking in any type of weather. It can get very cold on the mountain passes even in the summer. You can rent bikes by the day or week at the Nordic center or any bike shop. Bring those hiking boots. You can even get roller skiis and try going up the mountains.

O Be Joyful

by penumbra

You wouldn’t expect to see a medieval castle in Calgary, but we’ve got one right downtown. It’s actually the Mewata Armory, built during the World War I as a drill hall for militia and regular forces. The interior is largely open with rooms around the perimeter walls and a bowling alley and shooting range in the basement. Units that have been based at the armory include Southern Alberta Light Horse, 19th Alberta Dragoon, King's Own Calgary Regiment and the Calgary Highlanders.
