Stampede seating
by samntim
We are booking our seats for the 2010 Stampede and the seating map on the website is not too helpful.
Can anyone give their opinions on the best seat locations to reserve?
Thanks in advance :)

All one link
I would choose Platinum or Gold for Chuckwagon Races. For the Rodeo, there is a lot of areas with action so any seat should be good.

I found that map too, but it doesn't show where the seats are in relation to the ground and what's happening. There's also one that shows North Track Infield, North Infield and South Infield, but again doesn't show what happens where.
Still hunting :)

Lets assume the higher priced and valued metal has the better viewing. The Chuckwagon race starts in the middle of the stands area (Platinum), circles the track and the finish line is in the middle again

I did the Stampede last year and unfortunately it was raining and cold that night. We bought tickets in the bronze section and were told by the box office attendant that it was under a roof. Unfortunately it was not and we ended up ditching our seats and going down to the standing level floor. The standing level was much cheaper than the seats we had bought and although you are standing, you get to be very close to the action and actually hear the wheels of the chuck wagon making it more fun. When you need to get off your feet, go inside to the many concession areas and get a hot cocoa and sit down. There are monitors showing the race inside! Being in the standing area also allowed me to see the concert/show at the end up close. I really enjoyed it much more than I would have had I been sitting in the Bronze section.
It sure seemed pretty crowded in the arena overall to me, but I am not sure if it was representative because they said in the news that that was their lowest attendance compared to past years.

Thanks so much, that was great to hear your trip last year! I'm even more excited now and still have so long to wait!
We ended up with Bronze row AA for the rodeo as everything better had already sold out! and Platinum row Q for the Chuckwagons and Show, we may do what you did and have a look in the standing area as well :)
We are doing the Rocky Mountaineer to get to Calgary and next year they have changed their departure dates so we will be arriving in Calgary just in time, so we will be doing the whole stampede in just 1 day, not ideal, but better than not at all...

One day is actually probably about enough. At least it was for me. Most of it is like your usual "Fair." The show at the end of the night was cheesy but great. Have fun and if you really get in the spirit, buy yourself a cowboy hat as a souvenir. Actually, I had lots of fun at the free pancake breakfasts that are around town (although they're not substantial and the lines are quite long, so don't depend on them for sustenance).
Travel Tips for Calgary
Heritage Park
by madamx
Heritage Park is Canada's largest historic village and recreates prairie life in the early 1900's. The exhibits are mostly historic homes and buildings that have been moved from various areas in Southern Alberta or from Calgary and have been restored.
Even though it has a tourist-trap feeling to it, it still is a charming place to see. The most interesting exhibits are the tiny church, the opera house, and the general store. The Prince House (see Prince's Island under "must see" tips), is known to be haunted -- not surprising as the man had four wives. A must-do acitivity is a ride around the Glenmore Reservoir on the large old-fashioned paddle boat, the SS Moyie.

Follow the Bow river in Calgary
by dabidc
A great feature is to see the changing landscape, as one travels east along the river. The ease in which one can bike or walk the Cities pathway system.
Photo 1 shows a stand of Evergreen trees just 4 kms from the city centre. Aross the rover there is a bike/walking trail at a low level,, also a rial line, main line west to the Pacific, alos at a higher level and dipping up and down another trail. On the north side of the river where I took the photo from, there is a walking trail as well as a bike trail, then a busy section of Memorial Drive.
Photo 2 shows the river changing course and flowing under a Freeway to the City Centre.
Photo 3 shows an increase in the number of bridges which in turn suggests that the City Centre is close. the bridges carry a road and the Light Rail Train System, the C-Train.
Photo 4. Well the scene is almost rural and shows the river flowing along the north side of Prince's island. More details later.
Photo 5 shows a set of flood gates, to close if the river should rise after heavy rain, to protect the low lying older part of the City.
Window Dressings
by penumbra
During Stampede and Christmas, Calgary businesses get into the spirit of the season by having local artists decorate their windows. The results are eye catching and often humorous. As you notice more and more displays, you begin to recognize the style of different artists, even though each display is unique. The sad part is that in a few weeks the windows will be washed and the pictures so lovingly created will be gone forever. Next year, a new batch of eye-candy will be adorn the windows.
Packing List
by sandersl
Bring warm clothing even in summer. It is very dry and once the sun goes down it can get very cool. No matter how hot it may have been during the day. I allways carry a light sweater or jacket. Hand cream and lip balm
Skating on the canal
by penumbra
For any displaced Dutch skaters, Calgary has a canal that freezes over every year and is suitable for outdoor ice skating. Located in the west of Calgary along the Bow river, a thin finger of water from the river snakes around the park and ends up in a lagoon. During the winter this freezes over and the parks department regularly plows off the snow to provide a skating surface enjoyed by families through-out the winter. No need to worry if you didn’t bring your own skates because rentals are available at the Café by the lagoon.
