The Bow valley is partly an Industrial area and partly a valley with mountains on both sides. It is also a place to hike, to live and the river is good for fishing.
Grotto Canyon does have a small parking area, just off the 1A highway and the hike starts off by heading west towards the Baymag Plant, then the entrance to the narrow canyon is to your right.
There are Caution is advised at all times it is possible for the creek to rise quickly and unexpectedly.
Grassi Lakes
by madamx
This short, easy hike, with one moderate section has beautiful views of the Canmore townsite and Spray Reservoirs, plus a gorgeous waterfall. The trail leads to two popular emerald-green pools with interpretive signs.
Take the difficult trail; the only way it is difficult is in terms of footing, and has one steep section with stone steps. The easy trail is a boring access road
Grassi Lakes was named after Lawrence Grassi, a well-respected mountaineer and guide in the Banff Area. The stone steps you will use on the trail plus the the quaint wooden branch bench was built by him. Small and stout, he had fantastic strength, and was known for carrying injured hikers on his back.
You can also see his handiwork at Lake O'Hara, where he built a trail with stone steps. He was an incredible man.

"Look out for deer and Elk"
Last week, my wife and I stayed in Canmore and visited Kananaskis Country as well as Banff National Park.
At times it snowed and one had to be cautious at times when some of the deer and Elk population were at the side of the road, busily eating the fresh green grass.
"By the road to Kananaskis village"
Wow then there were 3 deer, ah well the other two were a little shy or just wanted to eat.
"See the other 2 just want to eat"
It is just as well these animals were in a Provincial park, they know there is no hunting.
"An Elk in Banff National Park"
Just inside the Park entrance, we spotted 3 or 4 Elk browsing by the rail line. There is a wire mesh fence to ensure thay do not stray into the main road, but just the noise of the train to chase them from the Rail tracks.
"Another Elk by the road side."
Just let me eat , please do not disturb me.
"A white breasted Nut Hatch."
I have to admit that this little creature did catch my eye this morning as we walked iin Fish Creek Park in Calgary. Yes I know that is a long way from Canmore. But I thought someone would enjoy the photo.
The tricks this one got into was quite amazing, climbing up and own and across and around the tree trunk. Hanging upside down as you see. No, I did not turn the photo upside down.
