Whyte Ave boutique hotel

The Met is a lovely boutique hotel located on Whyte Avenue. It is in a excellent location. There is shopping, restaurants, nightlufe and entertainment all around. Edmonton and Whyte Avenue have many festivals during the summer. It is very close to major transit, and downtown is only a few minutes away. All of the staff were extremely friendly and accomodating. They have valet parking, free breakfast, wine and cheese tastings on weekend evenings, free internet, fitness centre, and more. The decor is very nice and the beds are huge and extremely comfortable. The only downside is that it is located right on Whyte Avenue, which is very popular, so you can hear the noise from the street up in your room on the weekend.

Edmonton's Best by Far

I have stayed at the Met for about 2 months total over the past several years and for good reason (along with about 2-300 hotel/nights for fellow business associates):

Superior Service
Incredible Comfort
Excellent Value

The rooms are spacious, modern, with free wireless, large desk, TV, fridge and microwave in some rooms. Bathrooms are all different but spacious, modern as well and with excellent amenities. The beds are luxurious with massive down comforters.

The service is attentive, friendly and down to earth, with free valet parking. They will always go the extra mile to help where needed.

Unique Quality: The location can't be beat with about 15-20 restaurants, bars, nightclubs, live music and shopping nearby.

The hotel also includes a continental breakfast (including hard boiled eggs, toast and such) and managers reception nightly with free wine 'tasting' (several full glasses worth), cheese, crackers, etc.

Great Stay

by TripAdvisor Member GatronomicDelight

The Metterra Hotel is a tremendous spot to stay for a weekend get away. It is conveniently located on Whyte Avenue so it is accessible to downtown, Calgary Trail, and the university. During our recent stay we enjoyed friendly and helpful staff, efficient valet service and a nicely appointed room. Although the room had no view it was recommended that we ask for one that was located at the back of the hotel to stay away from White Ave which can be noisy on the weekend. It was a quiet location and perhaps next time we might try for a bit of a view by requesting a room on one of the upper floors - I believe the hotel is 6 or 7 floors.

A comfortable lounge accommodates guests for a continental style breakfast overlooking the lobby. The breakfast was a selection of cereals, grains, fruit; only one improvement -better coffee. At the end of the day you can enjoy a complimentary wine and cheese- very nice wines!

We normally stay at the Union Bank Inn but as it was full and the tripadvior reviews of the Met were very positive we tried something new. It will be a difficult choice next time as we like both hotels.

Met unable to handle "situation" appropriately

by A TripAdvisor Member

The Met was very impressive. Initially enjoyed the ambiance, friendly service and pleasant, clean room.

Unfortunately, we returned in the afternoon to find a workman in the room moving a towel rack from one spot to another about 3-4 inches to the right. We had not experienced a towel rack issue and couldn't imagine why something like this couldn't wait until the room was vacant. Especially when we found that the patch job was making a mess all over our toiletries including an electric toothbrush that was left in the space he was working in. The smell of the patch job was unpleasant. We complained to the front desk who offered to move us to another room or give us a toothbrush. We were tired and didn't particularly want to pack everything and move nor did we feel a toothbrush would be the same as the electric toothbrush covered in dust. We just cleaned up the mess that was left. As we did so, we wondered why a hotel of that quality didn't even think to send up cleaning staff to clean up the mess.

We left a comment card, but the response we got was the manager apologizing for a workman being in the room while we were out (huh?) and they did everything they could to accomodate us and provided a coupon for the next visit. As nice a place as it is to stay, the idea that it's okay to have a workman in your room fixing a problem you didn't report or wasn't an emergency while you're not in your room (or find him in your room) just doesn't sit well with us. We won't stay there again.

A great hotel on a legendary street

by A TripAdvisor Member

I recently stayed at the Metterra for 5 nights and found it to be a reasonably priced boutique hotel with a European flavour. Breakfast and highspeed internet are included in the room rate. I had stayed in its sister hotel, the Varscona, for a couple of nights and transferred to the Fantasyland for a conference. I fled back to Whyte and the Metterra after a dismayed look at the enormous concrete pile that is the Fantasyland in the West Edmonton Mall isolated on the edge of town close to absolutely nothing of interest. I'd be happy to make the Metterra or Varscona my home away from home if I spent much time in Edmonton. Somebody here mentioned that Whyte's bars and clubs make for a lively and sometimes noisy environment. I can vouch for that but Whyte is one of Canada's legendary streets with a distinguished history of hosting r&b performers. It's a fine hotel on a great street.

Surprisingly Impressed

by TripAdvisor Member purplecat22

I think there is potential for this hotel to become excellent. We certainly didn't stay in their best room, but ours was lovely just the same. The location is fantastic with everything you need a few steps away and access to the hotel from the south, ie Calgary, was so simple. It felt like a boutique hotel without the stuffy staff. We stayed for just one night with our 2 young children(7&3) and were treated very warmly. The free valet parking is such a bonus for this area.(Busy streets)
We had room service, which was prompt and courteous, even at midnight.
We waited in the lobby for our car and felt extremely relaxed, no hustle or bustle.
Our only negative would be upon checking out, I was not asked if I enjoyed my stay. I felt this knocked me down from my high, as I wanted to tell them how much we had enjoyed our stay.

Awesome - but caution on rooms facing Whyte!

by TripAdvisor Member timbone11

Loved our stay in the Metterra, truly one of the nicest little boutique hotels I've stayed in. However, we had to move rooms at 1 AM on a Saturday because of the street noise and rock bar across Whyte street. I would ask for something on the back of the building, especially if you're going for a weekend. We were finally moved and upgraded, but not until we complained 2 times.
