Relocating to Canada

by Lorena1978

Hi everyone,
Me and my boyfriend are going to relocate to Canada shortly, so I would like to know a couple of things: cost of living, health care (about the insurance).
rentals (for 1 or a 2 bedroom apartment). Any area of Toronto is fine, but close to public transport and ammenities.
Does anyone know if Scarborough, Toronto East is a nice part of the city? are there enough public transport and ammenities in that area?
I would also like to know about the job market.
Thanks again to all!!!!!

you should probably post in the Toronto forum. you posted this in the Edmonton forum, and you probably wont get any responses about toronto in here.

The cost of living- it really depends. If you're looking for an apartment in Toronto for example, rent per month can range anywhere from $500 - $1,000 CAN or more. (It just depends how nice the apartment is) and since you're looking for 2 bedrooms it probably will be closer to $1,000. Scarborough is a nice place; not as crowded as the downtown area but many parts there aren't as close to the subway line. There will still be buses however to take you to the subway. The Metropolitan Zoo is also in Scarborough! In my opinion, its one of the nicer parts of the city and I think you'll like it there. If I were you'd I'd do an online search of available accomodation and the approximate costs. Here's a good website for you to view:

Please let me know if you have any other questions, I used to live in Toronto and have spent a fair bit of time there recently.

Good luck :)

Travel Tips for Edmonton

In addition to taking in one...

by Gaspard

In addition to taking in one of our many festivals, such as the Fringe, The Folk Festival, Jazz Festival, or Heritage days, make sure you visit West Edmonton Mall, which is one of the largest shopping malls in the world. Shop!!! Alberta has no provincial sales tax, which makes your purchases here a real buy. Our North Saskatchewan River valley, with it's miles of paved waling and biking trails is beautiful.

John Walter Museum

by gubbi1

During a walk around Edmonton I passed by the John Walter museum which is located in the North Saskatchewan River valley downtown Edmonton. I didn't enter, but find it worth to mention it.
John Walter has become one of the wealthiest citizens of Edmonton around 1900. He started with building boats for the Hudson Bay Company and continued with various other businesses. In 1915 a flood destroyed his empire, he did not recover the losses until he died.

Public opening hours:
Summer on Sundays from 13:00 to 17:00

For a great view of the River Valley (you'll see the University across the River and also the Victoria Golf course), park your car around 100 AVe and 116 Street and walk along the Victoria Promenade.

Dueling piano bar

by Karlie85 about The Ivory Club and Ebony Lounge

The Ivory Club is a new piano bar on the far south side of the city. The place is actually quite large, and there are two pianos raised up in the middle of the room facing each other. There are 4 piano players that take turns throughout the night. Some of the songs they play are regulars, and they also take requests. You write you request on a small slip of paper, attach some money to it, and put it in a glass on top of the piano. The variety of music wasn't huge; they played a lot of slower songs like Elton John and some other country hits. They did switch it up by playing a Sean Paul and an Eminem song, which was interesting to watch, to say the least. It seemed like they were speeding up some songs just to make them go by faster, and the piano playing, at times, was a little more like piano pounding. It is quite loud. Highballs were about $5CDN. They also serve food, but I didn't try anything. The Ivory Club is a good place to go if you want to try something different. No set dress code. I went in jeans, t-shirt and sneakers. Everyone at my table was quite casual, but there were others that were dressed up a bit more.
