Lots of Bisons and other wildlife
by gubbi1
I have added Fort Saskatchewan because it is the city to which the Elk National Parc belongs. This is a great place to watch wildlife, especially Bisons. The whole area is great for recreation as in summer you can watch the animals and in winter time you can do crosscountry skiing. During my stay in Edmonton, we went here to watch the bisons and to have a great barbecue on one of the many places in the parc.

Fort Saskatchewan...farming and petrochemicals
by Darby2
"Farming"
The area around "The Fort" is rich farmland, with mostly grain being grown, but some specialty crops too, like peas, lentils and this field of borage.
Borage is used in the food industry, and the plants are a big attractor of millions of honeybees.
"Petrochemicals"
North of the Fort are huge petrochemical plants and refineries, producing fertilizer, precious metals, oil and gas products and industrial chemicals.
Beaver in Elk Island National Parc

Even though that Beavers are silently coming back to Germany (there are even some in the Isar, downtown Munich!!!), for me these animals are strongly connected to the Canadian Nature. I was told that there might be a chance to see one in the parc, so I was really glad that it showed up. Actually I was a bit surprised how big they are...
I have to find out exactely where in the parc we stopped for it.. so there will be an update....
Surprised by the size of this tree trunk, I had to take a pic of it. You can see well how the beaver cut the tree with his teeth.
Bisons in Elk Island National Parc
by gubbi1
These photos were taken on the Bison Loop in the middle part of the Elk Island National Parc. To me it looks like that there is almost a guarantee to see some bisons there as they stay close to the road loop. I advice not to leave the car as the bisons can come close to it and they are really powerful animals even though they seem very peaceful.
Here is a map giving an overview of the parc. You will find the Bison Loop just north of the South Gate.
