There are so many things that you MUST do when in this area. When in Banff, take a ride up the Sulfur Mountain Gondola for spectacular views of Banff. Find an area to go dogsledding, it is the best thing to do in the area. The scenery is great, and breathtaking doesn't describe it! Go skiing at Sunshine Village, just 15 min from Banff, in my opinion it's the best ski area in the WORLD! Going dogledding in the mountains just outside of Banff. Also, skiing at Sunshine Village Ski Resort, best place to ski!

The city of Calgary is a short drive south of Red Deer on the highway. Calgary is the largest city in the province of Alberta. For more information check out my Calgary page.

Red Deer Alberta

"Red Deer or Dead Rear?"
Red Deer, Alberta is situated about mid-way between Edmonton and Calgary.
Red Deer is a western Canadian boom town resplendant with a beautiful staid court house, a casino and the appearance of wealth and prosperity. And the people are nice and friendly and cosmopolitan.
Red Deer is a boom town because of oil and gas. It also has agriculture and more.
Because it is a boom town it's population is growing fast. It has doubled in the past twenty years and now stands at about 80 000 souls.
On the one night I spent there, I rented a nice hotel room at THE BUFFALO HOTEL for 23 dollars, plus key deposit. And then I went for a nice wak in the eighbourhood.
I was very disappointed to find that even in a small city like this there is a crack cocaine problem. The problem in in the bars and on the streets too. Some people smoke crack in the washrooms of bars and restaurants here. Not everyone. But atleast enough people that I mention it.
Other Cities/Towns in Alberta

"Central Alberta"
I know the selection is "Red Deer" but I'm also gonna dabble on the other places around Red Deer and in Central Alberta.
Red Deer
Red Deer is about an hour or an hour and a half South of Edmonton. There's not really much to do in Red Deer but it is a nice lil city that you can take a short lil detour if you're driving from Edmonton to Calgary or vice versa. But like some VT member already mentioned, it's not exactly a tourist attraction.
Sylvan Lake
Sylvan Lake is a nice lil spot approximately 20-30 mins West of Red Deer. Termed a "beach resort" (it's actually a lake), there's camping and other activites happening at the lake.
Drumheller
About 1.5 hrs Northeast of Calgary sits Drumheller. Made up of badlands, hoodoos, canyons and coulees, the area provides vast terrains of discovery.
