Kamloops & Sun Peaks Resort
The origins of Kamloops was back in the early 1800's with fur trading with the local Shuswap tribe and the setting up of the Huson Bay co in the area in 1821. During the 1850's more people arrived or traveled through the area in the search of gold, but the real expansion of the town was in the 1880's with the arrival of the railway. In 1962 the modern TransCanada Highway passed through the area and in 1970 the Yellowhead Hwy to the north had its junction in Kamloops. Around that time more industry arrived in the area with oil and gas refineries, paper mills and a smelter.
On the recreational side of Kamloops, some 4 1/2 hour driving from Vancouver or 7 1/2 out of Calgary, is the new vacation area of Sun Peaks which is known for its hiking and golfing during the summer and its snow sports during the winter months
