Coombs is a really cool little town north of Nanaimo, about 20 miles or so. There is a general store there that has put the town on the map, so to speak. It's called the Goats on the Roof General Store. The roof on the old store is sod and a family of goats can often be seen on the roof, grazing on the sod. The day we stopped there it was rainy and the goats were all out behind the store, trying to stay dry. :( The General Store is a great place to grab a picnic lunch. They have a bakery on-site that bakes the most amazing breads, pies and pastries. (If you can get one of their chocolate pecan pies - go for it! Delish!)

Behind the General Store there are numerous artisan shops where you can find the perfect souvenir of your trip to the Island. This was one of my favorite stops on our vacation.

"Beautiful Sunset"

We only stayed one night on VC Island, but the trip was wonderful. We arrived in late in the day, and our host at Long Lake B&B suggested the Light House restaraunt for dinner. NICE CHOICE. This picture was taken while sitting at our table on the deck.

"Off the beaten path..."

Our host gave us a hand drawn map of interesting things to see on a day trip from Nanaimo. This was one of many unique water falls that we probably would never have found without his help.

"Brickyard Community Park"

Beautiful, secluded, park, right in the middle of a golf community. But you couldn't see any signs of houses or golf course from the park. Awesome!

Nanaimo - 2nd Largest City on Vancouver Island

Nanaimo is the second largest city on Vancouver Island and it is also a terminal for ferries to the Lower Mainland/Vancouver. It has a nice waterfront area and an attractive downtown, although it was rather quiet when I was last there.

"The Boat Trip"

My wife Amy's father rented a 60' Grand Banks in Bellingham, Washington, where we started the journey. We made our way all the way up to a place called Desolation Sound, British Columbia. One we arrived there, Amy's aunt and uncle took our place and we flew back to Seattle on a water plane! This picture was taken during the flight.
