Something for everyone in Penticton
"Great summer vacation city."
Penticton, a city of over 30,000 people, is located at the south end of the Okanakan lake. It is 670 kms form Calgary and 390 kms from Vancouver a little further at 505 kms from Seattle.
There are two main beaches in the city, one faces north on the Okanagan lake and the second stretch of fine sand is a south facing one on Skaha lake. The city lies between the two lakes.
The river flowing from Okanagan lake is a fine place to float down its 5km length on a hot summer afternoon. Believe me the weather in summer is excellent for water sports being hot and sunny.
Some of the products the valley is famous for are peaches, cherries, apricotspears, apples and grapes. Thereby suggesting another product to sample, that of the visiting wineries and sampling the wines produced in the immediate area.
"From the deck of the S.S Sicamous."
My visit on this occasion was to the south end of Okanagan lake. In past years when the family was much younger the beach that attracted us was on lake Skaha.
On this visit the time was spent betwen a visit to the old steamer that plied the lake many years ago and visits to wineries for a meal and to buy some wine.
"A bistro for a lunch."
The Hillside Estate winery is located about 3 kms northwest of Penticton on the road to Naramata.
There are 5 wineries along the quiet road. Our choice allows for a bistro like facility for a meal, either inside a high ceilinged cool room or a table on the terrace overlooking the lake. We choose the latter, had an excellent meal and a wine form the estate and wathced the clouds build up across the lake.
As well as the bistro there is a wine tasting room and a small shop where the wines are sold as well one can visit the wine making facility.
