Travel Tips for Port Alberni

Birding In Port Alberni

by Sawdust8

If you are a birder you are always looking for good places to see birds when you are traveling. The best place to bird in "Port" is on the other side of the river from town. It is the mouth, or estuary of the Somass River. Here there is a great diversity of habitat; marsh tide channels, thickets, deciduous forest, coniferous forest, open water, and sewage lagoons-the favorite location for unusual birds! Birding is good most of the year because the winter brings many ducks and raptors from the interior of the continent. And summer, well summer is when all the smaller birds show up and sing so nicely!
To get to the Somass estuary, follow the signs to Pacific Rim on highway 4 through town till you come to the river. Turn right at the lights and drive about 2kms to the bridge over the river. Go over the bridge and take the first left right away. Stay on the paved road taking the right fork when it divides. When you come to a gravel road to the left park and go through the gate. Just start birding and follow the road.

Coombs, B.C. Canada

by canuck68

"A great place to visit."

The little village of Coombs is very very busy during the spring and summer months. The market is the main attraction I think as I describe below, but it has grown from an extremely modest beginning to lots of shops and interesting art stores.
Many people pass through on their way to the West Coast of Vancouver Island and they stop and browse the stores and eat at the restaurants and so on.
It is a good place for kids and adults alike.

"Coombs Market"

The Coombs Market has grown from the modest small store with a couple of goats on the roof to a very large and busy enterprise. The market is large and carries produce, jam, jellies, and every else imaginable. The bakery is legendary and it is a very strong person who can pass by the bakery without buying something.
The restaurant is large, busy and the food is excellent. Although we went at noon and there was a lineup we ate within 10 minutes of arriving. The portions are large and the quality the best. The workers in the restaurant really move quickly and have nice smiles on their faces and are happy to oblige.

"Interesting Shops"

There are many interesting shops to browse such as the one pictured below.
The prices vary but I thought most were very fair. There are arts, crafts, and lots of gift ideas.
