The Pioneer Hostel is a fantastic little hostel located in downtown Prince Rupert. Jesse and I stayed for two nights and we absolutely loved it! We would definitely recommed staying here to anyone!
The hostel is quite friendly. Our fellow bunkmates included a young couple from Vancouver Island, a young lady from Germany, a pair of Japanese tourists trekking around BC and a nurse from the Queen Charlotte Islands. Conversation was lively, and we got the impression from the hostel owner that this is the sort of group that regularly converges at the hostel.
The facilities were great. There was a full kitchen with a fridge and an oven. There were laundry facilities on the premises which were available for a very reasonable fee. There was a front room lounge with couches, books and boardgames. There was free internet access for all guests (very handy for updating my VT site!). There was also a shuttle to and from the ferry terminal, although we didn't take advantage since we had our own vehicle. Our rooms were great, small but tasteful and very clean. There were shared bathroom facilities and one shower on every floor (three in all).
The hostel was also very centrally located. We could walk just about anywhere within the downtown core in less than 20 minutes. Cow Bay was a five minute walk away.
Directions: Located in trendy Cow Bay. The address is 167 3rd Ave. East.
This place has a young owner who cares about the look and feel of the place. It's right by Cow Bay, which is a nice place to eat, get coffee, take a walk and take in the ocean.
Unique Quality: I was there at the start of the season, early June, and there were many vacancies. I paid for a shared hostel room -- one of two beds --but was all alone.
