Sandy Point Beach Campground: Avoid this campground!

Sandy Point Beach Campground is a private campground at Shuswap Lake in British Columbia. We booked three campsites for a large group of people in May 2005.

Eventhough, the guidelines and rules state no noise after 10 or 11 pm will be tolerated, it is not enforced. We had to listen to teenagers partying all weekend. We could not sleep. One campsite created a huge bonfire and we thought they were going to ignite the surrounded forest.

We went over to Herald Provincial Park one afternoon after hiking to Margaret Falls. After spending a few hours walking around and lying on a hill overlook the lake, we decided this is where we *should* have camped.

The trailer containing the bathrooms was always messy, dirty with garbage in the sinks, and toliet paper all over the floor. The showers were disgusting.

I would strongly recommend avoiding Sandy Point Beach Campground at all costs.

Solitude Bed and Breakfast: I Want To Be Alone

Solitude Bed and Breakfast is located in a beautiful spot, overlooking Shuswap Lake in a secluded, wooded area near the tiny town of Sorrento, BC. Sorrento is about half an hour from the town of Salmon Arm. If you've never heard of Salmon Arm, it is smack dab in the middle of a 12-hour marathon drive that Calgarians take to Vancouver.

Mary and Sig are perfect hosts; very warm and friendly, and interested enough in your daily activities without being intrusive. Their huge, gorgeous home is beautfully decorated with many Japanese antiques Mary has acquired from her family, and though you are not on the lake, there is a very nice view from the property.

We did not stay in the main house, but in the Woods Edge Cottage, which is just off the swimming pool. The roomy cottage is rented on a weekly basis, with no meals, and is just as comfortable and beautifully decorated as the main house. There is a loft area as well as a small kitchenette, washer and dryer, plus sattelite TV with DVD and VCR; A steal at $550 per week. I recommend bringing bottled drinking water -- the local water appears to have a very high concentration of minerals, is colored slightly yellow and smells metallic, the only down side to such a beautiful area.

Unique Quality: This place is a perfect hideaway to get away from it all -- very secluded and quiet, a place to nap your days away, hole up with a good movie, read by the pool, or wander down a country road, where people still wave as they drive by. The only noise you hear is maybe a local dog barking, faint traffic or the muted sound of a train. The city of Kamloops or Salmon Arm are nearby if you miss civilization.

Mary serves an abundant, high-quality breakfast that will probably force you to skip lunch. The home theatre, two hot tubs, and heated pool (nine feet deep at one end) with lounging chairs and umbrellas will make you feel very spoiled. I would compare the quality of lodging and food to at least a four-star hotel.

Silver Beach Provincal Park: quiet campground

A great little campground, mostly tents. Direct access to the beach and a cute pub right down the road. You have to get your water from a water station by the pub but it's not a far distance. No showers and only outhouse's, very basic but beautiful.

Unique Quality: Best beach on the Shuswap.

HI-Shuswap Lake: Caboose living

More than 10 years ago, Blair, owner of HI-Shuswap Lake, started the hostel and converted 3 retired cabooses as its living quarters. Besides the added dorm beds, wash room, and kitchen, much of the original caboose interior remains unchanged. Upstairs the hostel has a general store.

Unique Quality: The hostel has a native style sauna (looks like an igloo from the outside) that uses heated rocks to create steam. It can accommodate 10-12 people at a time. This usually takes place when there's a large group of guests staying. Rocks are first heated in campfire then brought inside the sauna. Then herbal water is poured on rocks until the sauna is completely filled with steam. I was fortunate to try it when I stayed in the hostel. It's a very hot and interesting experience, and a good way to meet new friends in bathing suit. After sauna we all jumped into the freezing cold Shuswap Lake.
