canadian immigration and customs at canadian airports for us passengers

by mouseyny

I am traveling down to raleigh, north carolina to visit a friend, then from there we will travel to sydney austrailia via both toronto and vancouver. I know that since we have to connect to a different flight once we reach toronto, we will have to go through canadian customs at toronto airport. Since the same flight will be stopping in vancouver on the way to sydney, I was wondering if we would have to go through canadian customs over again while we are there. Also, our flight from sydney, austrailia to raleigh, north carolina via both toronto and vancouver, will stop in vancouver first, before continuing onto toronto for our connecting flight back to the US. We are both US citizens and I was wondering if we have to go through Canadian customs once we arrive at vancouver international airport, then get clear by US immigration officials before our flight to toronto? Or do we keep flying onto Toronto and then get pre-clearance from US immigration officials at Toronto Airport prior to boarding our connection flight back to raleigh, north carolina.

Outbound from Raleigh to Sydney via Toronto and Vancouver. You will need to clear Canadian Immigration when you enter Canada at Pearson Airport in Toronto. You will have to pick up your luggage, clear customs and check in to the Sydney bound flight, and go through security again. The Toronto to Vancouver flight is technically a domestic flight, so no more Canadian Customs and Immigration. If it is the same aircraft, you will be checked right through to your final destination and might not even have a chance to de-plane in Vancouver.

On your flight back from Sydney, your point of entry to Canada will be Vancouver. You will clear Canadian customs there, and will have to check your luggage through to Toronto Pearson. When you get to Toronto, you will be on a domestic flight. I don't know if they will check your luggage back to Raleigh or not. Check with the ground staff there. At Pearson, you will clear US customs and immigration and your flight will be treated as a domestic flight when you get to Raleigh.

If you have a continuous ticket from USA, through Canada and on-bound, your luggage should go all the way to Australia. If it is the same carrier or at least one with a luggage agreement, confirm when you check your bags in Raleigh.

If you bags do not go through, you must collect them after immigration and customs. However you will have to walk through the corridors regardless.

On your return, again, if you have a continuous ticket the carrier should be able to check your bags straight through to where you pass US Immigration (i.e. Toronto), there is no need to collect your bags after customs in Vancouver.

Outbound flights from Canada with final destinations in the USA have pre-cleared customs and immigration. Therefore, when you connect in Toronto, you must clear USA customs.

Sorry Ron, you absolutely would haveto get off the plane in Vancouver. In Canada you clear customs and immigration at the point of entry. Entered Canada through Vancouver a number of times and my onward flights often had Toronto connections.

They will certainly not check your luggage through to Raleigh, as you will be going through US customs and immigration at Toronto's Pearson Airport. The advantage is that you will be handled as a domestic inbound flight at Raleigh, having cleared US customs and immigration in Canada.

What I don't know is if they will check your luggage through to Pearson Airport. For us Canadians entering the country in Vancouver, they make us pick up our bags as part of the customs and immigration process, and from Vancouver, the bags are checked through to our final destination in Canada. I suspect that US bound passengers might be handled the same way, as the Vancouver - Toronto flight is a domestic flight and you have to enter Canada to take it (which is why I suspect that you will need to handle luggage through customs there too).

Travel Tips for Vancouver

archeological evidence has it, Vancouver had settllements of coastal Indians in the year 500 B.C. the many scenic locations in and around Vancouver makes this City a memorable stay. I personally enjoyed the beautiful Parks, 180 Parks in the City alone.
the world famous Stanley Park has so much recreational value and is appreciated by tourist and the locals. an area of over 400 hectares operated by the Stanley Park Ecology Society.
the Park is also well known for the Lost Lagoon, a Bird Sanctuary

As an architect I was very anxious to see the City Hall building because I had seen it in so many books and movies. It is all exposed concrete with a huge interior atrium and glass roofs over some of the meeting spaces which although no doubt illegal, it was nonetheless very fun to climb out on these roofs and look down at the people and furniture far below. I have also heard from several people that Victoria Island is very beautiful but we were only in the city for a weekend and didn't get a chance to go there. Driving around in the rain observing (only) the many soaking wet prostitutes in the red light district

Drive up to Horseshoe Bay and then onto Whistler Mountain anytime of the year. It is very beautiful there and only a short drive to either location.

Vancouver is a beautiful city. Visit the parks, beautiful parks!

have fun!

Teams are a very important part of Canadian life. If you're around for a couple of months you should definately joinj a sports club of some kind. As you can see Volleyball is definately a bit of a sort option! The whole enthusiasm shared by every single canadian I met. An enthusiasm for life and all things adventurous. It makes the Brits look like a load of lazy lay abouts, which alot of them are!

Vancouver (a.k.a. Vansterdam) is a very liberal city; casual marijuana use for the most part is tolerated. Although Vancouver does not have coffee shops like Amsterdam, it does come close. There are underground shops that sell marijuana, but they are illegal and are often busted and closed. However there are cafes that allow you to smoke cannabis, like Blunt Brothers and the New Amsterdam. A very chilled scene! for more information on the herbal scene in Vancouver check out the off the beaten path page on my Vancouver page...
