Downtown Vancouver is small in comparison to many other cities. Anywhere you stay, you will be close to all. The west end which is close to Stanely Park, and Robson St. the shopping street offers many hotels. O'Douls which is a Best Western, A small hotel next door called Barclay Hotel, The Blue Horizon, and the Pacific Pallisades. Also the Best Western Sands, on Daive St. Downtown, you might try the Days Inn on Pender Street, in the middle of things, but a night a very nice safe and quiet area. Just east on Pender St is a Ramada, which is also nice. Stay away from Granville Street hotels, as they are directly in the bar area, and on weekends it can get very noisy, and there is a bit of a negative element in that area. Stay away from a hotel named the Dufferin, as well as the Howard Johnnsons. You might look at the following web site to check comments made by visitors to Vancouver who have stayed in hotels. www.tripadvisor.com

Most of the neighbourhoods in the downtown Vancouver would be perfect-with respect to your requirements. You might want to check out the Yaletown area of downtown Vancouver, http://www.findfamilyfun.com/yaletown.htm

The only hotel in Yale town is the Opus and it is very much upscale and expensive

Another option, which I always recommend to friends, is to stay outside of the downtown core, specifically in the West Broadway area. There's a Holiday Inn in the 700 block West Broadway and a Ramada in the 800 block West Broadway.

From these establishments there's an easy walk down to False Creek and Granville Island and good bus service from/to.

IMHO there's a growing problem in our downtown core with drug addicts, general scumbags, etc. that is just not very pleasant for tourists to deal with.
