Cheap doesn't mean crap

Lets make 1 thing clear. When you stay at a hostel you're there just for a bed. Hostels offer cheap accommodation of reasonable quality.

The staff here I found friendlier and more approachable than hotel staff. They were able to provide practical information for me, a budget traveler. In fact hostels are often much more useful sources of information because often the staff are travellers themselves.

The rooms are just a bed and a really decent locker. It is reassuring knowing that your stuff is safe when you leave to explore the city.

Security to get into the building at night is good adding to personal safety confidence. The area is not the best with homeless people littering the street at night. But this is Vancouver so it's not unusual. But this is the BEST located hostel in Vancouver. Right in the middle of the city. Walking distance to most downtown attractions, and on the clubbing strip.

Please not that the kitchen is not as complete as other hostels. For long stayers who want an oven and stove please consider the HI Downtown.

As of my most recent stay in Nov 2006 they were completing further renovations. I noticed they're putting new carpets in some rooms. This hostel is immaculately clean and maintained.

They also arrange heaps of activities like a pub crawl, nature walks, hockey nights, ice skating. All good opportunities for the single traveller to assist meeting others.

Unique Quality: The place has a nightclub below so try to stay in the upper levels 3 or higher.

Most of the rooms are 4 bed dorms with multiple individual showers and toilets located on each floor. Yes I repeat individual bathrooms. A hosteling rarity and luxury.

A bed in a Dorm costs $25CAN a night in the low season. A few dollars more if you're not a member, or arrive during the summer.

Look out for Stay 7/ Pay 6 night discounts available, or look to special introductory 7 night package if you're starting a working visa.

Right in the center of action...

HI website says this is the newest hostel in Vancouver, but nothing's new in Granville Street. In June 2003 I spent one night in HI-Vancouver Central. It's located in an old building surrounded by porn shops and night clubs. Inside it was remodeled so the facilities were new. I liked the shower/bathrooms. They were quite private. Also the magnet key card made me feel safe.

It's a Saturday night. When I returned to the hostel at around 11pm, the party on Granville Street just started. The night clubs had long lines of waiting guests outside and music was loud. I could hear the boom from my room until about 1 am.

If loud music doesn't bother you, or you like party too, HI-Vancouver Central can be for you. It's right in the center of action. Or, you can always ask for a room on a higher floor. The hostel has a elevator. I paid $20 (Canadian) with my HI card for a Saturday night dorm.

I didn't take a photo there. The attached photo is from HI website.

More about Hostelling International Vancouver Central

The Royal

by Carmanah about The Royal

The Royal is a club/pub located on the ground floor of the Hostelling International's Vancouver Central hostel. I've only been here once in March of 2004 with my friends, but I had a great time. We were just being ourselves, goofing off. There's great music and VERY cheap drinks (ie: $2.75 Heinekens on Tuesdays are a steal!) I think we were even there for Heineken Tuesdays.

Unfortunately there was a lack of a large crowd when I was there - it seemed rather empty for such a cool little club. Perhaps I was there on an off night. Tuesday night in early March in Vancouver? Yep. Off night. I'm sure it's better in the spring and summer.

I do, however, remember having a blast when I was there. I recall dancing to all kinds of bands, from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Radiohead to Guns N Roses. Britpop and indie rock? You've got it.

Inside the club are pool tables and arcade games, but if you're not playing there's plenty of space to relax and dance. The place has a great vibe for chilling out with friends, drinking beer and dancing... kind of reminiscent of my old Luvafair danceclub before it closed, in the way that it's so laid back and super casual.

Regardless, the fact that the Central Hostel is above this pub means that backpackers (especially Brits and Aussies) will likely swing by here, making it a great hangout if you too are a backpacker, looking for friends to join with on your travels. Dress code? What dress code?

Q: Vancouver to Oakland Flight "Hi from Sydney, I am going to Canada in July and would like to go to San Fransisco by plane. I am also ok to fly from Belligham..."

A: "You could try Alegiant Air. They fly out of Bellingham and they are very reasonably priced. I think they fly nonstop to Oakland or San Francisco."
