how central is Cambie St?

by Rumi-fan

We're off to Whistler for a week during olympics; staying 2 nights in Vancouver. I've sourced accomm on crn of 7th west Ave and Cambie st. is this addy a close walk to downtown? Under 15 mins say? What is this area like?

Tnx for any info.

7th and Cambie is just south of downtown. You can walk via the Cambie Bridge which I beleive will be open for foot traffic, this would take you about 15/20 minutes or you can take the Canada line from Broadway Station located just two blocks south of you and will take you about 3 mintues, there is also a stop at Olympic Village just to the North of you where you can also board the train. You can get off at Yaletown/Roundhouse which is the first stop after you go under and cross False Creek or you can continue to City Center Station which will be mid downtown. There has been a great expansion of the area you mention. Many new stores are in the immediate area, and there are some very good restaurants located along west Broadway. If your into Mediteranean food Martinis is great, it is located on Broadway walking east for about 5 blocks on the North side of Broadway. Public Transit in Vancouver is not cheap, so if you do enjoy walking that would be the way to go. I am trying to think what accomodations is located at the 7th and Cambie, I know there is a hotel located at 12th and Cambie.

Looks to me like you are on the south side of False Creek, meaning you are a good 1.5 - 2 km (1- 1-1/4 miles) from the downtown area. 15-20 minute walk.

that is 2 blocks from my office Excellent area. You are 2 blocks from the Athletes Village. There are great restaurants, bars and 2 good grocery stores. The Olympic village station is at 6th and Cambie. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Phil, it sounds like a condo rental at The Edge

Re: how central is Cambie St?

Ok Dave, not familiar with The Edge, thought it might have been the Old Sheraton at 12th, which I don't remember is still a Sheraton or not.

sorry, The Rise is at 7th www.therisevancouver.com
It is a pretty nice place if that is the one

Nah, the guy said it is his own private condo. He is renting it out for the olympics. He seems really genuine. 1.5-2kms is not too bad walking so long as we dont freeze. We are not from a snow country. thanks for the advice. Hope Cambie Bridge is a pedestrian bridge?

Re: how central is Cambie St?

Cambie Bridge is a vehicle and pedestrian bridge with sidewalks on both sides. Nice views of False Creek and the skyline of Vancouver as you walk across it.

You will have a great time

Not a bad area to be staying in at all! As the others have mentioned you can walk across the Cambie bridge to get to Downtown and you are also very close to the Olympic Village station which is the new Canada Line skytrain. This makes it very easy to get to/from the Airport and one or two more stops from there and you are in the downtown area. Have a great time and enjoy the beautiful city!

Travel Tips for Vancouver

Very cool city

by DesolationAngels

Burrard Inlet is pretty impressive. The whole waterfront area in Vancouver is amazing - the cruise ships getting ready to go to Alaska, the mountains across the water, the downtown core - it's all very cool.

The nightlife in Vancouver is second to none in western Canada, as well. All of my memories of Vancouver were destroyed by Canadian beer. No, not really - the entire trip was enjoyable except for trying to get back into the United States - the guy in the booth at the border was a real dick - make sure that you have the correct paperwork to get back into the States. They're much more lax about it on the east coast versus the west coast.

Touristinfo Centre.

by worldkiwi

One of the first places you should call into in downtown Vancouver, on the waterfront, is the Tourism Vancouver Touristinfo Centre, pictured here. The friendly and helpful staff here can book things for you and offer good advice. I booked and paid for my coach-ferry ticket to Victoria from here. There is also a commission free foreign exchange here called Custom House.

Lions Gate Bridge

by meteorologist1

The Lions Gate Bridge is a huge suspension bridge spanning across Burrard Inlet. The bridge carries Highway 99 from North Vancouver to Vancouver. The south end of the bridge is in Stanley Park. Construction of the bridge began in 1937, and today it can be considered a landmark of Vancouver. I think this bridge can be compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco for its amazing and ambitious architecture. Good views of this bridge can be seen from Stanley Park.

A: "You could try Alegiant Air. They fly out of Bellingham and they are very reasonably priced. I think they fly nonstop to Oakland or San Francisco."
