Coming to Vancouver, BC, Canada first time in October: which things are essential for packing

by rini27

Hi,
I got a job in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I am coming there in October with my famity. Please tell me what essential items I should bring to start a life in Vancouver ?

Re: Coming to Vancouver, BC, Canada first time in October: which things are essential for packing

That depends a little on where you are from. If from elsewhere in Canada, you already have everything you need. Vancouver has a maritime climate which means that the winter tends to be cloudy and rainy (generally not heavy, but I've gotten rather soaked in a downpour). That generally lasts from November through to February.

It generally stays above freezing, but can be in the low single digits temperature wise. If you want to get out of town and into the mountains - full winter gear - boots, hats, warm jackets, mitts / gloves.

Vancouver is a big city, so if you don't have it, you can buy it...

Bring money $$$$$$, the essential is food, shelter and family. Don't forget your pets if you have one. Good luck and Cheers Tommy x

Without knowing where you are from it's impossible to make recommendations. Everything that is essential is available here so there is no need to take it with you. If your relocation is being paid for then bring whatever makes you comfortable.

Hello,

Thanks a lot for your suggestions!!
I am coming from India.

India - first priority should be appropriate clothing. Depending on where in India you are from means that you will have some level of acclimatization to the climate.

We're not joking about the clothing....even the local Indian community had to help the Indian atheletes out when they came for Olympics as they were ill equipped. Don't bother buying raingear in India and bringing them here, you're better off investing in some decent quality stuff when you get here. If you can try to open a bank account in India that has a branch here. It will be much easier as they are bit *** when it come to building a credit history and giving you a credit card.

The most important thing to bring are some spices that you might not find at the indian shops here (they're good, but not great) the other thing is tea!! The stuff here is crap. I have people bring me a year's supply at a time. Also some cooking utensils (pots and pans) that you can't do without, those kind of things add up, and they won't be as good as the ones you're used to.

Travel Tips for Vancouver

Upside Down House

by Mikebb

We walked down to West Pember Street near Coal Harbour for a good view of the harbour and marina. In the little park overlooking the seawalk there is a large piece of metal artwork "The Upside Down House". Well worth a look and a challenge to your photographic skills to obtain the perfect photo.

This area is a nice part of town with views extending across the harbour to parts of Stanley Park and also to North Vancouver.

Language School

by Carino

I spent 3 months in Vancouver to study english and pass the Cambridge Advanced Exam. I studied at Language Studies International, short LSI. In my opinion it is a great school with really good teacher. I learnd a lot and never felt bored or stressed.

Have a look at their website.

Wandering through the trails...

by willowjade

Wandering through the trails in Stanley Park is certainly an activity that should be experienced when visiting Vancouver. When I am away from Vancouver I miss the sound and the smell of the sea...as soon as I arrive back I am sitting on a bench on the seawall with my eyes closed listening to the waves..

Lions Gate Bridge

by chris_i79

Connecting Vancouver with North Vancouver, The Lions Gate Bridge slices through Stanley Park and connects you to the Northern half of the city. The views of the city are fantastic and if you are there in rush hour you will have plenty of opportunity to enjoy them! If the bridge reminds you of a certain famous bridge in San Franciso, there is a reason. It was designed by the same man. The Vancouver version of the bridge is 3 lanes across with one lane being altered in direction depending on the traffic flow. There is no toll fee to cross the Lions Gate Bridge...just potentially 30min of your time if you are in rush hour traffic.

Vancouver Tip

by somewhere

For the record, I have to say I'm against feeding wild animals. This picture was taken because as Dominique and I were sitting by a pond in Stanley Park, this duck was just hanging around. We wanted to see how domesticated it was. The fact that it fed straight out of our hands is quite sad....

A: "You could try Alegiant Air. They fly out of Bellingham and they are very reasonably priced. I think they fly nonstop to Oakland or San Francisco."
